Guys with heads/head work and stock cam
I was wondering if anyone has done heads/head work with their stock cam? If so, what kind of performance did you see out of it and what heads/head work did you go with?
Also, I was wondering where you guys get your head work done? What do you get done to them VJ wise and what's the up-to-date technology with a VJ?
If I ever get to the point where I'm putting a cam in it, it'll probably only be a 224/224 or 228/228 size so I was wondering if just getting the stock heads worked on would be a better alternative than buying new heads. Also keep FI in sight for further down the road, possibly.
Let me know what you guys think and thanks in advance.

Yeah, I remember that thread. I remember another guy asking about heads only. Getting heads and staying with a stock cam can give you a good boost in hp, without sacrificing any drivability, or drivetrain reliability. I say heads only with all boltons is an excellent idea. I bet you could do 400 rwhp or a little more pretty easy, and no one would have a clue unless you have a loud *** catback, that is until you hit it and start walking away from them.

When I was full bolt ons, I noticed my torque curve had gone peaky with 4000-5000 being its best, and anywhere around that as much as 20ft/lbs off. LS1 heads flow, but they could flow better, but when I think about that graph it was telling me I wasn't holding back the stock cam as much as I think I was. I think I could have gained a bit more with heads, but the real restrictions with stock were the exhaust. 40HP gain from exhaust alone.
With the TR224 in now, the torque curve hovers around 360/ftlb with a gradual peak to 370 and gradual drop. Heads are waiting to go in, so I'm interested in seeing how much of a restriction the heads are.

Well I dont know about the normal cost for head work, BUT we do have a set of heads that I assume would be fairly comparable to a good port job. They also carry LS6 springs and stainless valves. They are ported from GTP.

so basically $800 shipped. These are also a nice upgrade if you have the older heads with the notch on them, you can upgrade to these and not worry about what type of gasket to get then. And you dont have to worry about being out shipping both ways...

Thanks for the info/opinions guys. Also for the thread link. I did a couple of searches and looked for a good bit but had no luck. Searches with the word "stock" in them and what not yield you a variety of stuff.
Any advice/info on VJ's?
