My grandfather in the early 90s bought a caprice cop car. 4.3. Mean little thing. Anyway it was knocking so my dad just put a brand new 93 4.3 in it why he could get a managers discount. Same exact engine, but funny thing is the motor mounts and tranny mount were toast(in 1993. Car is a late 87) Well the car finally took a shit after 250k of dding a few months ago and we just fully rebuilt it.. Motor mounts and tranny mounts were toast...
So i opted to go get new ones and the frikin tranny mount is the same POS that keeps breaking on my trans am.(not the 1le kind, but the gay kind for 7 bucks) Same thing!!!!!!!! I was like WTF. I knew the guy who was working and we crossreferenced it and gm has been using the same POS since like the late 60s.
Seems like they would come up with something better.
GM....:ripped:

Think about it. F Bodies can lift the rear of the trans with the torque arm, thats why they don't work so well in f bodies.
In every other car the trans basically just sits on it.
The real answer is motor mounts, they go first and allow the engine to twist which twists the trans mount off.
If GM put a more solid motor mount in, everyone would be complaining of vibration.
So whats better, get the cars 100,000 down the road with smooth running motor mounts, or have a shitload of warranty work due to vibrations.
In every GM car and truck I've owned one of my first mods was the engine mounts. With the old frame mounted clamshell mount I'd burn the rubber out and weld steel plate on the ends, then drill the holes. I never again had to mess with engine or trans mounts on anything I did this with.
This guy just called a caprice with a 4.3 a "mean little thing". I vote loss of man card.
Also, my Viper uses the same tranny mount as your T/A and a zillion other cars. Theres no problem with the design, shit doesn't last forever. Caprices are heavy, shit wears out.

Speaking of digging through the old parts bin.. The steering column in my '98 is the same as the one in my '80, which is just like one from a '67. Works well though.

Are you bitching about the motor and tranny mounts being toast after 250k? WTF DUDE???
Is the 4.3 a V8? Or is it the same thing they put into S-10's, Blazers and contractor trucks? That caprice would be a total slug with that under the hood.

No. Im bitching at GM using the same crappy parts that keep breaking often.
You dont know what a 4.3 is?

Nah, it's a 6. Maybe you're thinking of the 4.3 L99 in the bubble-bodied Caprice?

Yes, its a damn V6 they put into S-10's, Blazers, etc. I didn't know you could get one in a caprice, I thought they came standard with the 305 V8 or the optional 350 V8.
Seriously though, you got 250k out of the motor mounts and trans mount. We're not talking about peterbilts here, most people are lucky to get 200k out of a car.

The car has about 350k on it now.
No telling how long they have been broke, my dad fiancee/whatever drives it. I drove it trying to diagnose some crap right before it popped the headgasket and damn it needs some work.
4.3s come in a lot of crap too :)
Im bitching at GM using the same crap over the years just to save at our expense.

:eyes:Relax man 250,000 miles for a 7 dollar tranny mount and a couple 8 dollar motor mounts are you fuggin kidding me? those motor and tranny mounts dont owe you a dime, this shit wears out

The 4.3 is a 200hp V8.

The 4.3 is also a 200hp V6....
I have to concur though, that the 4.3's motor mounts are pieces of shit and break if you think about flooring it once. Every single Blazer I've had has at least one of the motor mounts broken and usually the tranny mount too. It's just a bad design, two pieces of metal with a piece of rubber slapped in the middle. Glued together....Piss poor design.
If the bolt went THROUGH the mount instead of around it it'd be all good but it's a crappy design hence why they blow so much.
OP, would you bitch if GM scrapped the SBC design in the 60s because it was the "same old crap year after year"?
...Didn't think so, take the shitty motor mounts in stride, the engine lasted 250,000 miles, what more do you want?

Maybe this is why, people are too dumb to know the shits broken.

Most people find the fact that so many GM parts are interchangeable to be a GOOD thing. Think about how much it would cost to find/buy parts for a vehicle if every single car had its own unique parts.

you give some ina reas and take some from others.
however gm could have definatly had some better quality peices or maybe a bit btter of a design or way to mount everything.

Interesting FYI: GM has one patent for the clamshell type mount, and it was from 1972.
I know this because I had an idea for a mount design that uses poly bushings in a much smaller easier to install design.
My brother in law went crazy doing CAD designs and specs and gathered all the info on how I'd get it patented. I decided not to do anything because seeing how the old ones need to come out, you're already prepped to slide the poly inserts in the originals and reinstall them. So it really wouldn't be any easier.
My main point though is that in 2002 they're still using a design from 1972.
