Qhich direction should rods be installed
I have asked four people the same question and have gotten two different answers so I am asking for more info. I would like to know which way the keepers for the rod bearings should be facing when insatalled. Should they point outward (toward the sides of the block) or inwards (towards the crank). I do know that both sides need to match just unsure if they should be in or out.
Thanks,
..RJ..

I'm pretty sure the tangs nned to be opposite of the valve reliefs. The important thing is that the chamfer in the #1,3,5,and 7 rod al face the front and the #2,4,6,and 8 all face the back.
That's assuming you're talking about aftermarket rods, I think stock rods may be different.

If you look closely at the big end of the rod, you will see a large chamfered end and a very small chamfered end. The large chamfered side mates to the filet of the crank journal, while the small chamfered side mates to the other rod. The bearings have the same chamfer but smaller. Sorry, I don't have a pic. Hope this helps.

On stock (LS1) rods the bearing tangs all 8 are directed to the same side of the engine (due to lack of valve reliefs all 8 pistons can go in any location), while SBC and all aftermarket rods will be directed away from the camshaft.

Thanks for the info. I assumed something was wrong when I spun four bearings going by what a local engine builder said. I was using stock rods facing all tabs/keepers towards theoutside of the block.
