Default cutting spring pockets. which dual springs to go with?

well, i was changing out my rev 1116's to 918's because one of my revs broke. well, i crossthreaded one of the spark plug bolt so now i've got to pull the heads off and fix it. i figure since i've got to pull the heads off that i will go ahead and get the spring pockets cut so i can run a big dual valve spring. my question is, which ones should i go with? ? i'm running the tr230 cam. i'm gonna be spinning the motor to 6800 rpms and want a dual valve spring that won't float and will be reliable. i want to get the valve springs right this time. i don't want another broken spring at 4000 miles.

so, which duals will spin to 6800 without floating, won't break after only a few thousand miles, and what installed height should i set them at? thanks for the help guys.

I think the 978's or 987's will work just fine for you if you are under .600 lift. I don't know those cam specs off hand. I happen to have the titanium retainers you will need for sale

Why not use the new crane duals and no worry about cutting the spring pocket?

I agree. If you are set on running a dual spring, look into the Crane duals or the new Comp 921s.

the thing is, i've got to pull the heads off anyways, so it's not really that hard to put in a bigger spring. i really don't want to be the guiny pig again on a set of springs. last time i tried the new springs i bought the rev 1116's and they stunk up the place. i want a reliable, proven spring. cost is really not an issue (within reason). i however, am not going to try out another new, unproven, and untested spring. i appreciate the input about the crane duals. i'm just not going to buy into them until they have been run for a while. thanks though, and keep the suggestions coming.

sorry if that didn't make sense and i sound like a jackass, one to many beers tonight

Unless you have a longer than stock valve you won't be able to get the installed height you need for the 987's. Use the Crane springs as suggested or get some longer valves if you want to do it right.

call combination motorsports and get the whats what on their springs. i run them in my .600"+ lift cam with no problems at all. they fit stock spring pockets and can handle cams up to .620" lift and will work with stock valve heights. the number is 702-798-8504

well, i called up combination motorsports and asked about their dual springs. i talked to them about the ex618's. they are 1.46" in diameter. they have 135lbs of seat pressure and 350lbs at .600" of lift. sounds like enough pressure to control the valves to me. the nice thing is that they don't coil bind until 1.100" that means that i won't be running them anywhere near coil bind when installed at 1.800". my only question about those springs is if 135lbs is going to be enough seat pressure with those big springs since they're probably pretty heavy. i could set them up at like 1.78" to get a little more seat pressure if i feel that it is needed. anyone have any input on the this? combination seemed to think that it would handle the the tr230 cam no problem. they even thought that the springs were overkill for that cam, which i like. they suggested the stock sized single springs, the ex616's and said that they could keep up with the cam that way i wouldn't have to machine my heads. but, since i'm pulling the heads off anyways, i just want to get some really good springs on there while the heads are off and it's easy. i definetly want a dual spring.

it will be fixed soon. i'm pulling the heads off now to fix them. while there off, i figured why not port them since it's gonna be a bunch of work anyway. partriot is porting them for $900 since i have valves and springs allready. then, we'll run

btw, where are you from in OK?

jrp,

briliant minds think alike. btw, did you ever figure out what that noise coming from your car was? just curious. it'll be interesting to see what you make with heads. i'm hoping to hit 430-440 with just a stage 1 head. then run some low, low 11's with the heads, clutch (still running the stocker), and some good weather.
