Loud bang after start, followed by oil leak.
Found an ad on craigslist for a 2001 camaro SS with 130k miles, former police intercepter. Guy said the car ran perfect until one night he went to start it up and heard a bang and oil started leaking out of the pan. The guy only wants 5500 for the car and i could probably trade him for my truck plus cash, just want to know what the problem is and how hard of a fix it would be? I heard it could be a broken cam but i'm not too sure. Any feedback is appreciated.

^^ Don't know. Guy said after that happened he hasn't touched it. It sounds like something bad tho... loud bangs are never good lol. Here is the ad just to list the mods.

My WS6 came with a power steering cooler from the factory and I think alot of Trans Ams and Camaros did, but maybe he was just told his was the only one to get one.
Anyway, saty away from that thing, unless you want the car, but it sounds like the engine has come apart inside. Maybe something simple to fix, who knows. You need to find out before you buy it.
When oil comes out of the oil pan AFTER a bang was heard, something most likely ripped a hole in it, like a rod that came apart or broke. Thats pretty much an engine that needs a rebuild.

Naa cause i need a daily driver to get to work and school so we'd have no time to pull the motor apart and see whats wrong. Yea ls6427 the first thing i thought is that he probably threw a rod and bad.
Sad really, that is a beautiful SS

Flexplates break on start up and can damage the rear cover. Thats a cheap easy fix.
Also assuming he's telling the truth about the loud bang happening at start up, or at WOT. No on knows except for him.
If you can't afford down time why in the hell would you even consider trading what you drive and cash for something that sounds like it could have a major engine problem. Thats not a good decision.

My guess is it threw a rod through the pan. I've seen it before. I wouldn't pay that much for car that you're gonna have to rebuild the motor. Maybe if it was cheaper but definitely not for 5500 bucks.

My vote goes to this: https://ls1tech.com/forums/10224353-post89.html
But I'm being optomistic.
I almost bought a '98 TA for $4500 a few years ago. That was the price. Then I went to drive it, it shook so bad it would probably empty out a big gulp sitting in the center console, and the oil sender was broken off so it pumped all the oil out. The girl selling it said her ex told her it needed a fuel injector.
She said she had been driving it for months like that, so I talked her down to $400 and drove it 10 minutes home. It never made a noise, I'm figuring the rod clearanced itself by that time.
I sold the engine to a guy who deburred the notch at the bottom of the cylinder, honed it and put one used piston/rod/ring assembly in it and is still driving it today (4 years later)
