I want to put a ls2 or a lq9 in my 1976 cj-5. I just want more power then the 304 that came in it(150). I know that it has been done. so lookin for some pointers from the guys that have done it. Anyone want to give a hand in the hunt. all info would be greatly appreciated. have been lookin for a few days and havent found alot yet.

I'm working on a LQ4 6.0L swap into my YJ. A major point that should be taken into consideration for anyone who wants to tackle a big project like this is being prepared to spend more money than anticipated!
Good places to start your search is Advanced Adapters, Novak Conversions, Ebay (where I was able to find good deals on the motor, trans, and transfer case), Currie Enterprises (custom rear end, cause your stock rear won’t hold up), rockvalleyantiqueautoparts (can fab custom gas tanks for any application).
Hope this helps good luck!

ls swap
I have done two LS swaps into a 98 and 99 Wrangler. Yes not the cheap way to go but certainly the fun way.
The 99 has a 2004 6.0/4l60e and the 98 has a LS6/4l60e.
The 99 is my winter Jeep. MN winters are cold and snowy. I have a hydro turn plow on it.
The 98 is my mall crawler summer Jeep.
The 98 is going back together after a frame off resto.

I am going to start a swap on my CJ7 in a few weeks, I just have to get a couple more parts, and clean the engine up prior to putting it in. Here are some issues I have run into:
(1) Keep your current trans or upgrade. If you upgrade, you will have to goto Novak Adapters to get the transfer case adapter. If you keep the Jeep transmission, you will need a Gen III engine-trans adapter.
(2) you will need to get an another adapter to get the speed signal to the computer. You can get this from advance adapters
(3) Be aware that a long transmission will cause problems on the short wheelbase CJ5. You will probably need new driveshafts.
(4) Read up on the problems people have with PCM and harnesses. You will probably also need to get a new chassis harness.
(5) Fuel issues. External or internal pump? Im going the easy route and going with external, but we'll see how that works.
and lets not forget about the rear axles. My guess is that if you had the 304, your axles will be strong enough, but if you are doing rocks, you may want to find a narrow track dana 44.
PM me if you need help finding adapters and stuff.
yay... first post!

Thanks, It looks good. I might be doing a 4.3 swap in one of my buddy's jeeps. Don't say put a V8 in it, I would, but the 4.3 is free, he already has it, and the jeep has a 4 cylinder now. He wants to put a lift on it and I figured it would help clear any engine / bell issues

Are you running drive by wire throttle or converting to a drive by cable throttle? Which intake manifold are you going to use (truck or car)?

I saw a jeep on YouTube with a 5.3 and it appeared to have long tube headers the guy said it was from a 2000 camaro has anyone tried this or have any info in it?
Also for those of you with the external fuel pumps how do they seem to be working and how have hey been lasting?

I've told some other Jeep guys this but FYI one of your big interference issues will be the steering shaft and using a truck accessory drive. The PS pump really gets in the way. Also Sanderson makes good block hugger headers that fit. I used the Sanderson headers with Novak mounts. Additionally, some folks put the engine in way too high in the frame for clearance. I would encourage you to try to mount it as low as clearance allows...this will help with handling, center of gravity, etc.

For you guys that are done...
Where did you get your engine and chassis harnesses?
Radiator setup?
Front accy. clearance? (planning on running an aluminum radiator with either one or two pushers in the grill)
Going with an LQ9, looking forward to the hp and torque.
Thanks!

I did mine about 7 years ago with a 99 LS-1. Its not the prettiest swap but I offroad this in SoCal and 20k miles with not issues street or offroad.
Turned the intake manifold around to run the air intake inside the cab.
Best thing ever and not much can get past you on the street.

Hi first time on this forum. I am currently doing this swap into my cj8. What exhaust manifolds are you using? My 5.3 is out of a truck and the exhaust dumps out right ontop of the frame.

I've just completed a Lq9 with 4l60e and dana 300 swap in my 83 CJ7. I used advance adapters weld in motor mounts and outside frame rail headers. I offset the powertrain 1in to the drivers side to help with front drive shaft clearance, and had no issues with the steering shaft hitting the power steering pump. I did however have issues with the driver side header. I suppose it was engineered to clear clutch linkage. Whatever the reason I have clearance issues with the header hitting the driver side tire in sharp left turns. Even with the offset I still had to run a segmented front drive shaft to clear the transmission pan. There a few things im going to have to redo but im very happy with the swap, power is smooth and will get up and go and still gets decent gas mileage. I reworked the factory harness wasnt hard and I have cruise control. My radiator is just an aluminum chevy swap radiator and I got creative with the hoses.
