I have heard of a few people running exhaust straight back (TD) without using any kind of linkage ( H pipe or X Pipe) to connect the exhaust to even flow and pressure from one side to another. Is this able to be done without having any negative effects? Is it just a bad Idea all around. Or are there really no positive or negative effects to doing this?

I would use a crossover. Helps with scavenging.

scavenging is the whole point of TD with an X, its a waste of pipe any other way IMO

If I can get a more detailed definition/explanation I would appreciate it...

Scavenging is basically the exhausts ability to literally pull itself out of the cylinder, leaving more room for air/fuel to enter. Crossovers even out exhaust pulses and help to speed the exhaust up..

theres no real damage that can be had but the bank's pressure cannot equalize. This is just not optimal, thats all. Scavenging takes place when the exhaust pulses/gases from one bank go into the x pipe to the adjacent bank, it creates a vacuum in that other bank which helps to pull exhaust out instead of the piston pushing it out.
