Default Buttons on t/a steering wheel light up?

I saw a picture of a ws6 and the buttons on the steering wheel lit up red. Mine have never done this. How do I make them light up?

mine never have either. i think the bulb inside burns out and you'd have to buy whole new button assemblies. not sure though

Yes there is a bulb that burns out. I replaced mine with red LED's and a 1k resistor. No more burnin out. If you do some seraching on the web you can find the info to do it. Its not too hard but a real pita to get the units unpluged from harrness inside the steering wheel. the units actually just pop out but the wiring is very short and hard to disconnect and reconnect.

You can get salvaged pieces from e-bay that aren't too expensive if you don't want to restore the ones you have. I bought a set that came from a '99 Bonneville or something-they stick out higher than the stock T/A buttons but my fingers are shorter so it works out for me...

Hmm... Mine don't light up either. I think it would look cool if they did. Is there a write up anywhere on how to replace the bulbs?

There was an amazing one on here, but the link isn't working. You can email this guy and he'll send you the write-up with pictures.

Its very easy to do, it only cost me like $5.00 for the new LED bulbs at Radio Shack and about 2 hours of my time. You need to be very gentle with the entire process but it goes smoothly. And yes, they are a BITCH to get back in after you get the bulbs fixed. I found an easy way, I put the back half of the button controls in because its easier to snap the plug back on, and then I put the front cover on. When you pry them out with a flathead screwdriver, DO NOT pry on the buttons, just pry on the outer sides of the control box, you have to work them out littel by little all the way around. Have to find the damn write up, its somewhere out there.

Scroll down to Electrical and Lights...you will see "T/A steering wheel light fix."

If you remove the airbag (2 torx screws on the back of the steering wheel) you can move the wires away from their little "channels" in the foam and gain a couple inches to undo the plugs.

Pic for reference:

You don't have to remove the steering wheel. He was saying to take out the airbag, with the steering wheel still on the car, its just easier because you can get extra length from the wires by cutting that factory zip-tie. It makes it MUCH easier to put them back in with that extra couple inches of wire length.

Hey guys, my buttons on my T/A do not light up or work. I do have an after-market Alpine Stereo though. I have heard there is an adapter or something I need to buy? Any input would be appreciated.

Well I have an aftermarket HU as well, so I wonder if THAT'S why they don't light up.

A couple of them light up on mine but most are burnt out. The car came with an aftermarket head unit but I put a stock one back in. The buttons on the steering wheel dont work. I wonder whats up with them I have never been able to figure out that problem.

No. I have an after market in my 94 and my steering wheel controls still light up. They don't control anything because I don't see the need to install the interface needed to use the controls with an after markets stereo. I never used them when I had a stock stereo either.

The common interface, BTW is the PAC SWI-X.
There might be others though.

Hello

Do you remember where you installed the resistor? What color wire and where? Thanks
