alternator issue

alternator issue i went out for a ride in the car last nite, (Datsun 260z lt1/4) and my battery died. I threw the multimeter on there, and the alternator wasnt charging. I had the alternator checked a couple of weeks ago, an it was fine. Are these alternators self exciting, and what is the single wire coming out back of the alternator? Where does it go so i can make sure it connected properly? its a 96 lt1 or lt4 out of a vette.
