General LSX Automobile Discussion - Has Chevy ever officially rated our cars' top speed?

I got asked yesterday what the top speed of my car is. As meaningless as that is, (especially since it was coming from a Supra fanatic fresh off an assignment in Japan) I didn't know. I have never seen any official word or track tested spec on top speed either.
I do know there was a factory governor most every model year IF Z rated tires were not ordered, but thats about all the info I could find.
And I've pegged the speedo in my last Camaro(93 LT1) so I'm sure the LS1's are more than capable than of least 160ish.
I'm just curious if anybody knows what they'll do stock, balls out, hammer to the floor and unlimited track in front of you.
If you had unlimited track id say it would go a little over 170mph. The govern I thought was around 167 or something so if that was taken off I would say you could get up there. I've had the car past 155 on the interstate before so I know with unlimited track you would probably go higher. It's hard to tell though

The limiter with factory Z-rated tires was set a 162

Correct Electronically limited to 162mph

If your car came from the factory with the lower rated tires it was 130mph(I believe), do a search this has come up before.

I tried searching. Since the search feature no longer returns results of anything even remotely resembling your entry... it didn't work. I googled a bit too and only found the bit about < Z rated being limited anywhere from 110mph to 130mph depending on model year and tires.
But couldn't come up with anything regarding the Z rated from the factory top speed. So I figured someone here might know just off the top of their head.
Limited at 162, now I know that much. I was unaware it was limited at all by anything other than the laws of physics. Halfway there!
Nobody knows what it will REALLY do, sans governor??
If not, oh well. I'm a 4.10 kinda guy anyway, top speed is overrated and something only the Supra crowd uses as a dick measuring contest.
I imagine fccs is probably right, its gotta be around 170ish stock.
As trivial as it is, its kinda annoying that I can't find it anywhere on the far and wide interweb. Tried searching mags, edmunds, reviews from '99 etc and nobody mentions it. These days even a Hyundai specs top speed right in the brochure lol. That alone is interesting.

top speed mean nothing you are not going to hit your top speed in a drag race

While top speed is a pretty useless figure by itself, dragracing is far from the only kind of racing. On a big road course you may come near to top speed.

Not in a stock LS1 fbody.
Yea for a stock fbody, without even a lid or exhaust or ANYTHING you probably could do around 170 but it would take a while to get there. The search has been like broken for weeks so don't bother searching either. I wouldn't worry much though, it's easy to take the govern off anyways.

Gearing wise its like 256 on an M6 but I don't think the stock LS1 has the balls to get it there in 6th

i deleted my speed limiter mwahaha. haven't been over 100 since i did it though.
and pegging the speedo in a 93 is a lot easier if you got the 115 speedo haha. mine was governed at 105 since it didn't come with the z rated tires.

The drivetrain would fall over itself at speeds that fast. The motor may only be at 6500, but think how fast the driveshaft/rear end are spinning :eek2:.

93 has the same speedo we do... 155... or mine did anyway.
LOL at the comments bout 200mph, removing the limiter, and top speed being useless... thought I covered that last one already and wasn't askin about removing the limiter.
Anywho thanks for the info guys(to those who contributed) its gotta be roughly near what I thought, it was just a curiosity.
When the time comes I'll be going with 4.10s anyway, and the only racing I do is drag racing :D

I've done 180mph after mods, stock wise I hit that 162mph limit and thought I broke something...
I'm sure 170mph stock would have been easy to hit considering it had quite a bit of pull in 5th hitting that 162.
I didn't trust my suspension after 180mph... felt like that speed required something tighter.

^ if you didn't get the Z rated tires in 93 you got a 115 speedo. the rest are 155 though.

I remember some early nuts testing the "drag limited" speed of a stock 2002 Camaro SS, Corvette and Z06. Camaro was 167, Corvette was 177 and the Z06 was 172. Temp humidity and air pressure will always play a big roll at results.
As I remember the reason for the test was to measure the top speed reduction in the Z06 due to brake vent cooling drag. And the Camaro was just hangin around so they through it in for shits and grins.
This was in print somewhere not online.

I don't think that 5mph loss was solely because of the ducts. From my understanding the FRC had no benefit over the coupe (less streamlined actually), reason behind the new ZO6's being traditional coupes again.

my car topped out around 211, was still pushing but given the speed we shut off
oh wait...stock? :secret2:

A magazine did a test on an ls1 camaro ss and I am almost positive it was limited at 162mph. Not sure where anyone can safely do those speeds. Not around here anyways.

electronically limited. I changed it to 256mph (turned if off) with hptuners. hit 5700rpm in 5th on stock 3.42 gears a few years ago. f-body.org/gears showed 172mph. THEN with hp tuners, i set my limiter to 170 and hit the limiter with 373 gears in 5th. i believe i was just about out of revs too
give me 2 miles of straight road. I'll need a mile to hit 160 and a mile to safely slow down :D

one of these threads came up not too long ago and i saw some guys in Austrailia got a stock f-body(dont remember t/a or camaro) to 172mph with no limiter(obviously)

Again density altitude and temp will vary the results greatly on the same car. Take that car to sea level on a cold day and 0% humidity and 165 might be the best result, results vary with conditions, but yes, I certainly would believe that the auses hit 172.

In my 2002 z28 a4 with long tube headers/ tune/ ram air 2.73 gears. 164mph was as fast top speed i could hit. I had a gps in the car with a buddy watching it. My needle was buried, rpm was at redline, thats all she had.

I got 173mph around 4.30am so cops were still in bed, but probably woke up when they hear me coming.....:burn:... gone.. lol.
Was at 5900RPM in 5th gear, didn't have the guts to put it in 6th as needed two hands on the wheels.:eek2:

the rpm was at redline? with 3.23's it doesn't hit 4th til 130-140ish. i'd imagine i'd run out of power before gear.

I have tried it, at thoes speeds you usually just drop in mph going to 6th
