It is very possible that damage to the converter hub has occurred. I would have some one take a look at it for you. Vince

I think Vince meant that the neck may not be square and cause converter wobble.

I'm curious did you get the trans bellhousing bolts all tight before you noticed? Not knocking you but wondering if that's how the pump gets damaged.

yea i got it all bolted up first. then i turned the engine over and noticed it took a LOT of effort. i assumed it was because hadn't been run in a while and was all nasty. but that was not the case, obviously. i didnt think to check the converter, because i didnt think it had been tilted forward. then i rememberd that it did once and was like DOH!!!

This unfortunatley is the single most comon mistake. Even when the car is never started it can damage the pump and failure happen either imediatley on start up or shortly there after.
Its very possible the converter hub could be damaged and should be checked very carefully.
Sorry for your missfortune.

Reach in the big hole on the bottom of the bellhousing and turn the converter often while tightening the bellhousing bolts.

I skipped the obvious, first make sure the converter is in the trans all the way before you even aim them at each other. There is no three click bullshit. I don't even know anymore, you can just tell when it's in all the way.
