How long should Comp 987 dbl springs last on a 231/224 cam?
I have about 15000 miles on my car since I had heads/cam installed. I was wondering when I need to consider changing these springs out.
If it is time for a change, what springs should I go to? It seems the Comp 987's and the TR231/224 cam aren't a good match for one another as some seem to be getting valve float with the combo.
Are there better springs out there for my combo?
The cam officially specs at 230.8/224.3 .576/.563 110.8LSA, and I do have YT rockers as well. Should I also look into getting a set of aftermarket lifters? I'm still running stock ones.

verbs, pls. tell us more about the valve float issues. How often and at what rpm?
I got a h/c package going in tonight (hopefully); see bottom line of sig. The 987's came with the RGR heads...

If you feel you need to change the 978's are much stiffer. Comp recommends that you use the "R" lifter with that spring, but we are running them in our car without the lifter. We will be replacing the stock lifters with "R"'s very soon though. What rpm are you getting float? We had a 232/240 and it didn't float at 7100rpm.

The only reason I felt I was getting some valve float was because my TR 230/224 cam isn't pulling all the way to 7000rpms like I've seen some other TR230/224 cams. It peaks at about 6300rpms, and starts to slowly tail off from there, and drop more at 6800rpms.
Here is a graph, but the rpms got cut off on the bottom:
It peaks at 6300 on the graph.

Verbs, I would go ahead and replace the springs just for the sake of maint. With 15K on them, they're nearing a point of losing pressure and possible breakage. Taking into consideration that there isn't a proven spring out yet for the LS1, I would recommend replacing them every 10-15K with any cam over .540 lift. Better to be safe than sorry.
FWIW, just because your car peaks at 6300 while others don't doesn't neccessarily mean you're getting float. Every cam is different, and every set of heads is different. That being said, the variance in cam specs and variance in head flow is going to effect peak #'s. Your graph looks fine to me, just looks like the cam peaks a little earlier than some others. You're making 440 rwhp, wtf are you complaining about anyway :p

I'd test the old springs to see how they held up if I can find a place that will test them locally. I just ordered a new set of 987 springs from *Gratuitous Plug* Thunder Racing since they were on sale.
I think I'll go ahead and get these springs cryoed just for the fun of it. There is a place in town that does it for pretty cheap.
