Default What is the small wire that goes into Alternator??

I couldn't find anything with the search - so asking:

What is the small wire (red I think) that plugs into the alternator?? The plug can hold 4 wires - but only 1 is used? It's from a 2002 camaro ss.

what is this wire for?

forgot the exact term but its something like an exciter wire, basically without it the car wont charge, i believe it runs back to the guage cluster and gets 12 volts when the ignition is on
