Not exactly the answer you are looking for, but it really depends on the specific tire you are talking about. Tire widths are all over the place, forget the spec (285x35-18) but look at the overall tire width.
Luke at Lindsay is selling Team Dynamics 9" rims for the V1's. I have put a toyo R888 265/35R18 on them, and there is room for at least 1" more tire width overall. Limiting factor is the rear trailing arm. With my R888's there is a bit more then 1/2 inch between the tire and the trailing arm left. The R88 is specd at 10.8 " overall width.

You will need to choose the correct aspect ratio to keep the overall tire diameter correct, for the sake of the Stability Control system. Example - With the stock 245/45/18 on the front, if you put a 275/35/18 on the back it will be too small of an overall diameter in the back and it'll play hell with the Stability/Traction control... since the rear tires will be completing more revolutions per distance relative to the fronts, it will be interpreted as wheelspin, at least under certain conditions.
Use this calculator to help you with tire sizing:
For reference, I bought a set of OEM wheels, two of which had 285/30/18 pilot sports on them. Width wise they were fine, but they did cause problems with the Stability/Traction control, as anticipated.

no a 285 drag radial would not work properly nor fit properly on a 8.5 rim.

A 305 drag radial will fit but it is not the best application.... for instance you could put a 265 and a 285 on a 8.5" wheel and the 265 would give more traction because you would have more rubber on the ground due to the rim being so narrow. Going to a drag radial I am assumong you are looking for the most traction and wider is not always better.
