Default Broken Valve Springs

So I took apart the driver's side valve cover to inspect the FOD I had found on my oil drain plug magnet during my oil change. This is what caused it! Over 45,000 miles of abuse racing and WOT. I did however allow the engine to reach operating temps when I daily drove to work. The 1st picture is #5 intake spring and the other is the #7 intake spring (lower portion is collapsed). I just ordered new Patriot dual springs to replace these, they will be on the car by the weekend. Luckily it is only a 2 hour job.

Some old patriot duals I had laying around from a different build. I would say so, glad I didn't drop a valve.

I am going to try the PAC 1518 behives when my current duals go. Kinda pricey but I think worth it in the long haul..... I guarantee though the PACS will be on my next build...

That is why I am a fan of dual springs. You have sort of a safety net, if the outer breaks you wont drop a valve and vice versa for the inner. With a single... eh, hope and pray.

Currently, what ever is stock on the 317 heads. When I replace them, it will be what ever Patriot sends with their springs (Viton I believe).

But if you're running a quality single spring that's the proper spring for the application, you stand less chance of it breaking in the first place. AND, you get a lighter, more free-revving valvetrain.

Dual springs aren't there as a safety net - they're there when the engine build dictates it.

To me, replacing one set of patriot springs with another is just

These springs actually have over 45,000 miles on my car (unlike I previously stated), previously used on a diffenret vehicle project of mine. They were not brand new when installed on this car, if that is what some of you are thinking, these were used springs! I am replacing them with new springs.

Did you notice a decrease in performance? If the outer spring broke, would you still be able to tell right away or not?

My wife took it drag racing and ran a 7.71 @ 91, that weekend I changed the oil and noticed a piece of valve spring on the drain plug. I parked it until the next weekend to diagnose the valve spring, which are the pics you see above. No loss of performance was noted prior to the findings. This post was merely to inform people to check your springs once in a while.

The top picture clearly shows a broken spring! Out of the five coils, four are still intact. Look at the second to bottom coil, it stops winding around the valve. That is a broken coil.

EDIT: Based on your video it is hard to tell, but it sounds like a rod knock or a broken intake valve spring. It could also be the intake rocker failed or fell off.

45K miles on those springs are pushing it to start! Even the beloved PAC's won't appreciate that abuse for 45K miles!

Glad you were saved
