Default Water leaking from above the water pump

Hey Guys,
I have a 1997 Firebird. 3800 V6 There is water running down from the top of the water pump to the bottom of the car and leaking on the driveway. I have checked the pump and found nothing. Check all visible water lines. I was told today that there is a plastic elbow behind the pump that is bad about cracking and leaking. Does anybody know anything about this plastic elbow (bypass) IF so, what is the procedure to get to it. He said he thought all you had to do was take the alt. off and you could get to it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks,
JMAC
