Default Top Speed Calculator Accurate?

I recently checked this out after having my 383 installed. With my rev limiter being at 6500 rpm I was wondering how accurate the gear calculator is? According to the Fbody.org site with my 3.42s spinning @ 6500 in 5th I could pull off 196 mph. I find that hard to believe and somewhat scary if its anywhere close to that. What would be a legit estimate of what my top MPH would really be?

That is just theoretical top speed. You need to actually have the horsepower to overcome the drag to really achieve those speeds.

True top speed will depend on weather conditions, car weight, aerodynamics, horsepower, gearing, etc. and cannot be easily guessed.

^true, 6th's theoretical top speed is way up in the 200's. I had my tach at 5700rpm in 5th before and still climbing when I let off, supposively its 173 but I doubt I was going that fast so I just say 160+ when people ask.

I plan on getting a decent GPS in the future. I've heard some models stop at 150MPH though. What model do you have? I'd like to think I could do at least 170MPH but who knows. Any stroker guys out there who have actually found out?

thats just based on your gearing what it *could* do. you have to have the power and the aerodynamics to get a car moving that fast. the faster you go the more power you need to keep pulling.

The speed limiter is gone. Theres a few roads around the area I'll have to venture down once I get a GPS and some Z Rated Tires

The problem with using a GPS is it's only accurate to a certain point unless you've purchased a really expensive model (I'm talking really expensive lol), a military mode,l or probably an Aviation one would work if you could hook it up to a laptop

Consumer handhelds will give a good idea, but it could still be 10mph too slow or too fast.

Anyways, yes if you had the HP, the theoretical speed could be reached. So I think it's time to start the "I need a Turbo so I can do 250mph" fund

^ +1.

One thing to note it that air resistance is not linear.
Food for thought:
The Bugatti Veyron only needs about 270 horsepower to go 155mph, but it needs an additional 730 horsepower to go 253mph!

Not only is it power, but you have to worry about controlling the car at those high speeds too. F-bodies were built for a top speed of 155, so by going over that the car doesn't have enough downforce and can get "jumpy" at speeds if you know what I mean.

But yea, with enough power you could overcome the drag and push close to 200.

Maybe your inferior CAMARO, but Firebirds can go 400 before experiencing any problems I kid of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Firebirds could handle a few more MPH based on the slightly different rear design.

thats for sure, what ever speed I was going at 5700rpm I was barley touching the road. I need a 6LE splitter

-and a giant wing and some NAWS! j/k

I wonder about that in all honesty. Stock for stock it might actually hurt them in top speed (extra drag) but as the speed increases with the extra power it might help to keep the rear planted a little better.

I haven't had any problems with the tops on, with them off...well thats a scary situation when you get rolling.

they are acually worse at high speed, Mr. Lingenfelter almost killed himself going 180+ in a bird back in the 90's when the car flipped backwards because the rear wing created too much downforce and lifted the front of the car.

drag doesnt necisarily mean downforce. and if you add more downforce in the rear your supposed to add more to the front as well. I dont know anything about lingenfelters set up tho but hes smart so I imagine he did, maybe not tho?

Interesting! Was is Lingenfelter's car or Callaway's? I know he drove the Sledgehammer for them.
