Default 10.0 and 11.5 index racing

I have a question about index racing.

Do you need to have a car legal for running under the index?

For example, do you need a roll bar to run the 11.5 index race?

or a caged car to run the 10.0?

What do they do if you run under? The idea is to run as close to the index as possible without going under, so it seems you shouldnt need to build the car for being under.

TIA

I know they let me run the 11.50 index without a rollbar. So I would assume the rollbar would allow you to run the 10.0 index.

I would ask the track, some tracks are more forgiving than others. It doesnt matter what the dial/index is, its what the car runs.

Pete, sorry I don't over here often enough.
The answer is no you do not need the equipment to run in the Index class.
With that said, however, if you do go under, it is the track's discretion what to do with you.

It really is not any different than running time trial or any other class. You go under by thou or a hundredth chances are they will not say anything. Go under by a lot and you will get an invitation to the principle's office likely.

Many of our Corvette Pro 11.50 and Pro 10 racers don't have the equipment to go under.

Also keep in mind, a power adder car is more likely to violate the 135 mph rule (same as 9.99) than go under 10.0. We have several Corvettes having that issue right now which is we we changed the class up a little to have a 10.0 and 10.5 index.

Thats the whole reason for 10.0 and 11.50 indexes, so you dont need the 'big step' in safety gear. If you run quicker in eliminations you go home anyhow.

Although it seems kinda silly that that running .0000000000000001 under technically makes you illegal safety-wise thats just the way they do it. Like Redgar said most tracks wont say anything if its a double breakout and you run 9.97 or something, but run up there and run a 9.20 and most likely you will be going home

Agreed with Redgar and KP. The required equipment for the index is what is required (meaning no bar for 11.50; a bar, jacket, 5-point harness, screw-in valve stems, etc etc for the 10.00).

Thanks, all. I kinda figured that is how it is, but as I'm still learning, I like to ask questions.

I've been through this type of thing before with a buddies car. There is something somewhere in writing that says if you are within 10% of an ET MPH limit, the track can require you to have the appropriate safety equipment. I think it all depends on the track management and how far they want to take it. A few of my friends have 10.0 cars, and once in a while they pop a 9.9X. Management always comes over and reminds them to slow it down, but don't kick them out.
