Wink Clean YOUR FAST intakes!!!

well as i was replacing my cam and oil sensor, i decided to take the FAST apart and make sure everything was ok. ive had it on now for just about 2 years...

i take it apart and holly hell!! i didnt realize how dirty it was, it was drenched in oil and dried oil.

so i proceeded to clean the top and bottom out w/ a brillow pad. afterwards, i headed down to Race Proven Motorsports to have them port it while its off...

so moral of story, i recommend cleaning it once a year, if you have a catch can, id still go in to double check....

next on the list when i put my TFS's on will be a catch can.

i think it could have been robbing me a few ponies, but who knows. when it goes on i should be picking up some lost ponies plus a few extra w/ the port job

-brandon

ps i didnt get any pics, but i was thinking about it while cleaning lol

x2

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to look for that in the future. I'll probably do it the same time as I'm seafoaming just to get everything squeaky clean

Like this?????

Ugh... I went to a breather. I got tired of trying catch cans even though I never bought a nicer one. The intake bolts scare me, and taking them on/off a whole lot wasnt very appealing. Now its bone try at least.

I added a catch can after I had my heads off. I had a ton of carbon build up caked on the pistons from that oil.

won't carbon build up on the pistons no matter what? I mean, it is the combustion chamber...

Well, I was expecting discoloration. I didn't measure it but I'm guessing it was more than 1mm thick at the worst. I ended up using a mild abrasive/scotchbrite pad on a dremel to get all the carbon off.

We recently had a problem when the GFs car developed a missfire/hesitation.
It turned out to be a combination of fouled plugs and leaky intake gaskets.
Heres what #7 and #8 plugs looked like, the rest looked great, and all were about 1 year old NKG TR55s.

We replaced the intake gaskets, heres what the ports looked like.

We cleaned the inside and outside of the LS6 intake at my works parts washer, squeaky clean!

I came to the conclusion that the cause of this was, 1: it didnt have a catch can, but we installed one recently.
And 2: The car ran great for several months after we did a cam, LTs, new plugs, etc. Then we moved to new apartment complex where the parking lot is at a steep angle. I figured that was causing the oil in the intake to collect at the rear of the manifold at get sucked into #7 and #8. The car only developed the missfire/hesitation a couple months after we moved here.
So Ill be keeping a close eye on the catch can and rear plugs in the coming weeks.

Oh its not that bad once you get the hang of it. #7 just takes a couple minutes to remove. To get #8 just remove the coil pack and its cinch after that. 15-20 minute job tops to get them out and back in.
I can actually do all 8 plugs on the other car (LT1) in 45 mins.

Yep, I`ve tried everything and the only way to keep oil and hot oil vapor out of the intake is to cap off everything and go with a breather. The car now runs much better and no more fouled TR6s!

I'm serious...when I bought my used FAST 90, it had oil all over it, so I seprated it and put all three pieces (tight fit) through the dishwasher with regular dishwashing soap.

On a side note, I don't think this would be a good idea if the top piece is painted.

I mean think about it...dishwashing soap is made to cut grease on pots and pans, so why wouldn't it work on motor oil on car parts?

Make sure that you don't leave heated dry on, it could warp one of the layers...

Hmmm... used oil from crankcase. Contains carcinogens. I wouldn't put that in the dishwasher.
