For reference you can go to autozone's website and look up the amount of oil you vehicles engine needs for most vehicles. I had the same problem you have when I bought my Jeep.

book says 5.5 quarts

Thanks guys. 5.5 it is then! Now I just have to get more oil. Bought 5 quarts.

Either 5.5 or 6. It depends on how long you wait for the oil to settle before you check it. When I worked at a Chevy dealer some guys would start up a car/truck. Let it run for 20 seconds, then immediately check the oil level. This is incorrect. You need to let it sit for at least 5 min. to let the oil in the valvetrain settle to the oil pan. I learned this the hard way after leaving GM and going to work for John Deere. A 12.5L diesel engine will hold 1-2 gallons of oil in the upper end for 2-5 min before it drains down. Now that is a little over full!!

5.5 is what my manual says but I run 6 because of all the bearing failures due to apparent oil starvation. I was reading some posts last week about guys running 7 who road race/A/X thier cars. That seems excessive to me me but maybe 6.5 would be fine and not have the crank kick up oil and aereoate it. That would seem like the biggest issue to me????

6 would be ok, but I'd think 7 would be a bit much. I put to much oil in a old truck I had and it smoked very bad. I'll try 5.5, let it sit for 20 min. If I need more I'll put in the half quart I'll have left. Thanks for the info guys. I have alot to learn about the great LS-1!!!

I run 6 quarts in my cars as well

You more oil you run the more power you will lose with oil drag on the crank. Yes minor, but just put what it is called out from the manufacture. The dipstick is also not calibrated. So with the proper size oil filter... it calls for 5.5 quarts.

6 quarts

Well, that was easy! Changed the oil today. The only issue I had was that the filter was very very tight. I had to stick a screw driver in the filter to turn it. The oil was the worst oil I've ever seen in a car. Very dirty. I bought the car and haven't drove it yet. Waiting for the roads to get nice. Now the car has new oil and a new filter. Should run better. The woman I bought the car from had a tornado fuel saver in the stock lid tube. I found that out when I put the slp lid on. So I knew I had some work to do to the car. I think I saved a LS-1. Who knows how bad it might have

i would say buy the cheapest oil possible then just fill it until it comes out the top of the filler neck. guaranteed 20,000 miles :D :D

if you use the PF61 truck filter, 6 quarts even

04-05-2009, 08:38 PM
after 3-4k it might burn some oil, so just stick with the 6

I would be worried about smackin something with the bottom of the filter being lower than the pan and headers.

If you hit the oil filter then you got bigger problems to worry about

04-06-2009, 10:16 AM
I use the larger mobil 1 filter (M1-206) and with that I use 6 quarts of oil. Car is going to burn some oil anyway, so even with regular filter I would put 6 quarts.

Actually i have already smacked a hole in one. Stray rock on the driveway, had to change the oil right there in the dirt.:bang:
