Angry My Cam Install Horror Story

I bought a F-11 Cam and Spring Package for my 02 Z28 and Fishers Automotive in Baton Rouge, LA installed it. I picked up the car and drove straight to Geoff Skinner to tune it, Geoff got it running nice for me, but Geoff and I noticed a lot of valvetrain noise that seemed a bit too loud, so I took it back to Vic Fisher and he told me I had a collapsed lifter, The noise was a sharp loud ticking and it would only happen after the car warmed up , like 5 miles or so, and it will not go away once it started, so.... This weekend me and some friends replaced the lifters and lifter trays, we did find a lifter that was horribly collapsed, and it was in the area of where the ticking seemed to be coming from on the back of the drivers side head, so I was convinced that the prob would be fixed once we installed the new LS7 lifters... We finally got the motor back together after working all weekend, and we fired it up and it sounded good, but I knew that it would have to heat up good first, well..... about 5 miles down the interstate my worst fears came true, the EXACT same tick, in the exact same place!! I'm sick over this whole thing, don't know what it is, and I'm regreting the whole cam install...

Subscribing. I am having a similar problem. My ticking started after custom futral cam install. Mine also starts the loud ticking after warming up to operating temps. Also seems to be coming from rear driver side head area. I can't really hear it at idle with the hood up, but while driving it becomes very loud. Mine makes the sound under accel and decel between 1300 and 3000 rpm's. I have ordered a pushrod length checking tool and am going to check for correct pushrod length before tearing the motor down to see if i have a bad lifter. Currently i have the comp 7.4 length pushrods.

Does it now go away after a few more miles or does it keep doing it no matter how long/far you drive it?

I'm an lt1-tard, but this should apply. After my cam swap I had a loud ticking that new lifters, constant valve-readjustment, new rods, etc wouldn't solve. It turned out to be a loose egr plate on the back of the intake. Sounded just like a bad lifter.

i would start checking for other problems, did you use a pushrod length checker to make sure you have the right length? My experiance with Futral cams has shown they like a longer pushrod

a good video would help maybe, check it with a tube or stethoscope , inside the engine or what, maybe a junk spring.... sounds kind of like a lash issue.

Once mine warms up it does it no matter how many miles i drive. I also put in a melling pump and ls2 chain and gears during the swap. I ordered a pushrod length checker yesterday. It will be here tomorrow. I should have checked this to begin with. If this solves my problem i will report back and let you guys know.

I have a similar story only my ticking/tapping noise only comes when i cruise at a constant speed for a couple of miles. If i get on it hard then there is no noise at all. The first set of LS7 lifters collapsed and now this set seems to be ticking also. I'm starting to wonder if I should just switch to comp cams. Car is back at the shop being looked at to figure out the problem.

I'll let you know what they find.....

My 2 cents is it sounds like a oiling problem, I would start with a mechanical guage and see what you pressure is, it sounds like thin oil and low rpm is bleeding out the lifters...... at least something to check. It would explain why when you put under load and rev the noise goes away.

If you are looking to upgrade lifters go with Morels.

Check to see if you have an exhaust leak at the head.

Ok, so you're convieniently leaving out some inportant info. Did it make this sound BEFORE the cam swap(Fisher) or AFTER or after the tune(Geoff)? You should NOT hear unusual noises after a cam swap that were not there beforehand and certainly not after at tune. Can you narrow it down somewhat to get to the source of the problem? Is you preload correct? People who tell you they can live with an engine that sounds like a sewing machine need to have their hearing checked. That's NOT normal and don't let them convince you it is. If you have a problem fix it. Don't just live with it.

I can tell you that my TR cam is making a heavy sewing machine noise since I have it...but no problem other than the sound.
