Default Rear defroster trouble

I guess this forum is about the closest one, being electrical and all. Anyways, my rear defroster cuts off real quick after I turn it on. It'll run maybe 2 minutes tops, enough to melt frost just a tad so you can see the lines. Then once it cuts off I have to wait like 5-10 minutes to turn it on again, which last the same or less time as previous. Any ideas? I hate ice scraping.

I was getting ready to do a search on this very thing. Now that the weather is changing, it is bugging me again! Mine does the same thing, and it is not right.

There were a few posts about this last year and I believe it had something to do with the 40-amp relay in the engine compartment. It will also affect your power seats at the same time.

I will do the search and see what I come up with.

I replaced the 30amp breaker with a 30 amp fuse and now it is working just fine.

You will find the 30 amp breaker for the defroster and electric seat in the fuse box in the dash by the driver's door

Thanks for the info! Does it stay on permanently this way?

It will stay on until you turn it off. The auto shut off feature you are currently expierencing is the cheap as breaker GM used, overheating.

I did the same thing.

It will shut itself off in 10 mins via the timer in the system.

Just don't move your power seat to it's end with the defroster on or you'll blow a fuse.

This is how GM bootlegged the defroster/power seat system with a circuit breaker.
Being that the breaker senses a current overload by heat, it trips it for an set ammount of time til it cools down and reconnects.

The defroster shuts off after 10 min. with the fuse (the way it is suppose to do). I was also able to move my seat while the defroster was on with no trouble, but, just in case and have a box of 30 amp fuses in my glove box for insurance.

"Just don't move your power seat to it's end with the defroster on or you'll blow a fuse."

That's kinda important, should be in the owners manual! I've done it with no problem....yet
