Default Steering Column

I've been trying to fix excessive play in the steering tilt mechanism on my 96 z28 (90,000 miles) for a long time, but I have not been able to get anywhere with it. To describe the play, if I grab the wheel at about 1 or 2 o'clock and pull it aft, it rocks about 1/2 to 3/4 inch towards my opposite elbow. There is positive spring pressure which returns it to the "normal" position, but I'm sure this is not correct. I've disassembled the airbag, removed the wheel and lock cylinder and tilt collar so far that I though I'd never get it back together, but could not find any thing really wrong with the tilt mechanism or the steering column. I put it all back together, and it still works ok, but I still have the play. Has anyone else had and fixed this problem? I guess I can go to the junk yard and get a replacement, but I'd like to fix this one if possible. Any ideas?
