That may be do-able...
Have you considered a 285/35, with a little more sidewall?

I would go with a 9.5" wide wheel if you want the tire to look right.

I wouldn't feel safe with a 285 tire on a 9" inch rim especially if the manufacturer doesn't recommend it. Also, 285/35/18 would be the size to go with if you want to stay close to the stock height.
