I have a bit of play in my steering wheel. At all times there is about a 1/2" or about 20 degrees of play in the wheel when turning either way. When under the hood I grabbed on the steering linkage and can turn that the same 1/2" as the wheel. So it seems like everthing is tight from the wheel to the input of the rack. I saw there is a how to on shbox.com about rack bearing adjustment, not sure if that will work. Does this mean there is something wrong with my steering rack?

Same with mine. Thought it was my rag joint, but now I'm pretty sure it's my rack. The car pops when turning the wheel while moving or shifting the weight of the car. I am going to get a new LS1 rack and steering knuckle...no more rag joint.

Okay, yeah that is what I was thinking. So all we need is a LS1 rack and the LS1 steering shaft right?

There are a few from junkyards for $50 but I think I am going to call up a local place that rebuilds racks to get a reman with a lifetime warranty. There is a steering shaft on ebay right now for $20 shipped.

When I first bought my car I had the same problem you are describing. I found that guide on shbox.com and did the preload adjustment and everything was perfect. Try that first before spending any money.

Also from what I've read, and saw in someone's car, the LS1 rack is 90* off from the LT1 rack. So simply installing it with the steering knuckle, you will also have to take your steering wheel and turn it 90*.

Okay thanks, I will try this first. I have a rag joint eliminator on order. So if the bearing adjustment works I might just call it good because it doesn't seem to have slop at the rubber rag.

No, the steering knuckles are off by 90 degrees, which causes a problem with the LT1 rack, but if you use the LS1 rack, there's no problem at all.

I did the bearing preload and it made my steering a lot more stiff so I backed it down a bit. But the real problem was play between the lower steering shaft and the input shaft on the rack. So I removed the bolt, put anti-seize on it and tightened it down really good. The steering is solid now. I will probably be selling that rag joint eliminator kit.
