Default skip the machine shop?

Ok so the local machine shops are quoting me some silly prices to get my ls1 bored and honed $1500+ so I'm thinking about getting an ls2 block and using probe 4.000 pistons instead will this work or does the block from the factory require a hone?

to get proper piston clearance the cyls really need to be honed.
ls blocks don't require boring-just honing.

i do sell fully machined ls engine blocks
an ls2 block honed to size, align bored w arp main studs is $1850.00 +shipping

You don't need to bore an LS1, honing to size is all that's required. $1500 seems like a rip off though! Does that include a new block?

post in your regional forum, some people in your area may know where to go for good prices and work.

Ls1 don't need boring. Guy just charged me 350 to bore and hone my ls2. Total for bore and hone, balance rotating assembly ( already balanced from LME but he wanted to balance with damper and flyweel) line hone, clean and shot peen block 250, total was 1050. anyone ever have an aluminum block shot peened??

when I was first looking into building an ls2 a North Jersey shop gave me a price of 650 for machine work.

$1500 is a little much especially if its only machine work. I paid $1200 for complete machine and assembly of my shortblock. The main thing is to talk to people who have used the shop you go to, one wrong clearence will ruin your entire motor.

Is there something wrong with your LS1 now? I just saw a 100,000+ mile '00 LS1 that has be autoxcross raced for about 4 seasons allover NY and PA with virtually perfect cylinder bores and ring seal. They just put the heads back on with new gaskets and bolts and went racing again.

These things are pretty much indestructible in normal and even rough use. If it is your engine and you have changed the oil once in a while, and especially if you have used synthetic oil, you might just leave the bottom end alone. Spend your money on the heads. $1500 can go a long way if you know what to do or get good advice. That's not the easy part.
