Default How Do I Use the Ratchet Shifter in our '73?

Hey guys,

Our 73 Camaro has a Hurst ratchet shifter, but we've never used it..
Could anyone tell me how your supposed to use them? It's like a normal automatic, P-R-D-N etc. but I think you have to drop it down to use the ratchet. But Idk where to go from there. Here's what it looks like

Thanks!

I'm also not 100% sure what kind of tranny the car has, I would guess a TH350, so idk how many gears I have to ratchet, you know? lol.

on some of those, you can lift up on the shifter lever, and use w/o the rachet mode

Hello space shuttle. Your car looks like mine with all the guages. haha I'm thinking of installing a barometer, why not.

If your looking to manually shift it with the rachet shifter, pull it down to D. Rachet back until it stops, your in 1. Slam the gas, and rachet forward to up shift. Pretty easy. It should have a stop so you can't shift into R, just N.

Hahah^ yeah the gauges are pretty nuts, thats for sure. I found the model on the Hurst site. It says to bring it back to Neutral in regular mode, then push down to get into ratchet mode. To shift do I literally just go Up or down? Or, forward or back rather?

That looks like the one I have in my Wrangler. Put your fingers in the rings, pull up and shift into D. To manually shift, you grab the handle and pull it backwards to downshift, or push it forward to upshift. If you pull it backwards, it will downshift one gear. That's it. It will not let you go straight from 3 to 1 or 1 to 3, so you cannot miss a shift. You have to shift, turn lose, then shift again. Once you've started manually shifting, to go into R or P you you have to go to N, then back to D, then pull the rings.
