When i did my 1 3/4" hookers, for the drivers side i tried unbolting the steering shaft to no avail. So i removed the bolt that goes through the motor mount and used a trans jack to lift the motor up like an inch or so by the oil pan, and then the header just slid right in. Mind you i had acess to a 4 post lift, hope this helps though.

Yea dude, when I went to 1-7/8 from 1-3/4 I had NO CLUE it would be that big of a deal!! If I had to re-do it I would sacrafice the 20-30rwhp and keep the 1-3/4 headers. The Kooks 1-7/8 are the biggest PITA EVER!!!
Get ready to unbolt the steering shaft, motor mount, mount pedastal, valve cover, oil filter, oil pressure plug, and power steering!!! ******* PITA!! I'd rather pull the whole motor and start over.

There's a little 1" square casting block on the corner of the block that sticks out. You can cut that off. Piece of cake with a cutoff wheel or sawzall. Removing that will give you a lot of clearance to maneuver the header into place. It's just ahead of the oil filter.

Before you do that, did you try the turn it 90* trick that I know works with their 1-3/4" headers?

To get the 1 7/8 Kooks in my 2002 on the driver side I had to take the steering loose, remove the alternator to get to the motor mount, take the bolt out of the M/M and jack the enging up as high as I could get it. It was a painful process. There ain't no "sweet spot" to get them in w/o jacking up the motor.

Unbolting the motor mount from the K-frame is the best way to go about it if you don't want to cut anything.

I just got done installing my Kooks 1-7/8" headers yesterday, and all I had to do on the driver's side was turn it 90* so the collector was facing down, push it up, and rotate it into place. The steering linkage was still in place, the oil filter, everything. If you use header studs like I did, you won't be able to install even one in the heads prior to putting it up in there (only applicable to the driver's side), but that is no big deal.

OK. So you're saying you didn't have the heads on your engine when you put the header in. That's a whole different deal man.

With my engine fully assembled and in the engine bay, my passenger side 1 7/8" Kooks slid right in w/o any cutting or adjustments. The driver side required removing the steering linkage, taking the alternator off, removing the bolt from the motor mount, and jacking the engine up as far as it would go. Also had to make a very small notch in the K-member.

Negative...heads have never been off this car. On the passenger side, I was able to pre-install the header studs, move the header into place while the gasket was hanging on the studs, and put it in place. On the driver's side, I did exactly as described above, but I was not able to pre-install the studs on that side, so once the header was in place, THEN I installed the gasket, studs, washers, and nuts, and tightened it down. No notching, no removing ANYTHING.
