Default My ATI Super Damper Flew Off

I was just on my way to Autozone to pick up some oil for the car earlier today. While I was turning through the Round-About Hwy I heard a dreaded clunking noise. I then lost my power steering and coasted over to the shoulder. I quickly got out only to see my brand new damper lying in the middle of the Round-About. I managed to pick it up and throw it in the back seat before any cars happened to run it over. The worst part is I was only a mile away from my house, luckily AAA got me a free tow. What a great Easter . My question is what would cause a damper to just come off like that? The flywheel is nuetrally balanced btw. Nothing appears to be damaged other than the damper being scratched up. I'm on the brink of insanity at this point. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, interesting I would have to say somehow it got installed wrong. (I have never installed one).

Also if I am not mistaken they are SFI approved which from what I know means its not going to come flying off at 7k rpm and take a head off.

Someone probably removed the bolts to sabotage you!
In all seriousness, that sucks. Sorry to hear that. Just put it back on and use loctite and hope it doesn't fly off again..

I would probably have it inspected before reinstalling, it could have hit the ground REALLY hard.

I agree with the guys saying it was probably an installation error.

Does this appear to be too damaged to have put back on?

Did you happen to have a crank hub bolt in there? Should have a big SBC washer on it.
You've got to get that thing in tight... some even suggest red locktite

I've got a spare ARP hub bolt and washer here if you need it.
I bought two by mistake for my own install.

Thats just what I picked up off the HWY. I'm guessing my washer and bolt are on the road still. I'm definitely going to have to look into the red lock tight.

Also check the threads in the crank snout to make sure they're not stripped.
More likely, it just wasn't in tight enough and vibrated loose.
That bolt and those threads are strong enough to support you turning the motor over with a 24" prybar.

Agreed - the bolt probably just backed out. It needs to be in TIGHT. I just went through this with installing mine.

I wouldn't hesitate to reuse it. Just make sure there are no burrs in the path of the belt. You don't need your belt fraying and snapping.

If it were me, I'd send it back to ATI to have it checked.

Make sure to install the keyway for the crank and balancer if you have not done so, this could be the problem.
