Question Cats or NO Cats?????

Getting some different feedback from outside sources that taking my cats off will help my car then others say leave them on it will get better gas mileage and wont be able to tell the difference in power gains. I know alot of you dont have them because yall are running long tubes, cant really afford that right now, being laid off kinda put a damper on plans but just considering some cheap mods for right now.

I just finished up my intake/heads/cam/headers swap on my car and I went MAC longtubes without cats, same as you to save money. I honestly wish I had money for cats because the car smells when it's in the garage (i know i need a tune also) but mostly the raspy sound at low to mid- rpm range is something i'm fairly sure is caused by the lack of cats, not just the headers. If the smell or sound doesn't bug you, then get some used headers dude.

I run cats... it cleans the sound of the exhaust up a lot. Its prob holding back a few ponies but I hate rasp! I also believe rasp is made by the y-pipe merge tho.

Unless you're running a max effort, not remotely streetable, full on race engine (which your .sig does not indicate) removing the cats will increase emissions, decrease power, and violate federal law. 700+ HP street legal engines are becoming more and more common. So why would you remove the cat?

FWIW, keep the cats. I have QTP LTs with offroad y-pipe and there is quite a bit of rasp. Plus it draws a lot of attention when you go WOT, and any deputy within a mile or 2 radius will hear that sumbitch.

I did a Mac off road y-pipe on a 98 Z-28 and knocked off 3 tenths in the 1/4 and got better gas mileage and that was w/ stock manifolds.

I wouldn't waste my time or money with shorty's, leave your setup alone till you have cash for a longtube setup.

Its obviously going to cost more to run a catted y than an ory... Just saying, since your trying to save money.

I agree with this gentlemen. A friend and I went with an ORY on his LT install and there is definitely some rasp, but more importantly it stinks up the entire shop. Its not a bad smell, its just sickeningly sweet and lingers forever. I'm going with a catted Y on my LT install.

I say cut the cat, sounds a hell of a lot better. Not much in power gains, but you can get the true sound from the car. My first mod was CATS! and I have never looked back. People say you get rasp, yeah but if so change the muffler. Mine has no rasp, deep and throaty.
