Thumbs up Starting my clutch install/replacement... **pics**

Ok so today i started the dreaded clutch replacement. Snapped a few shots of my progress so far...

heres my clutch disc.. its the AC Delco clutch kit..

started off by disconnecting the battery, removing the center console, shifter, etc..

next i jacked the the car up on some cinder blocks, loosened up the trailing arm, removed all trans/cross braces, unplugged all sensors,etc.. in the pic you can see i removed the slave cylinder and zip tied it up to the car so it didnt just hang

and if all of that wasnt fun enough...now came the REAL fun part

loosen all 8 bolts on the trans (the top 2 aren't that bad as long as you have about 2 feet of socket extension). then drop the trans and slide her out

if you try to do this without a tranny jack.. don't

o ya.. and leave the driveshaft tail in

That's all i got for today.. tomorrow i'll hopefully get the bell housing, pressure plate, flywheel, etc all off and get the flywheel out to the machine shop.

LOL... that mess looks all too familiar and it's such a joy to have to clean up while still under the car. Cheap cat litter and Mineral Spirits really work wonders for messes like that.

LOL - Yup that tailshaft's gotta stay. BTW - You don't have to remove the whole console when you drop the tranny. Good pics and work though and good luck.

If you are stock or near stock, that clutch kit will work fine.

Not too difficult once you get in there huh?

I've dropped my T56 many times. Every time I've done it by myself with only a floor jack, lol.

floor jack for me. I put a stage 2 in mine cause I dont ever want to do it again. she loves to grip

I had a nice long *** 1/2 to 3/8 extension and swivel sockets. so easy with an air compressor and an impact gun!

i've done it twice with no floor jack, just good old fashion muscle. probably woulda been a lot easier with a second set of hands or a good transmission jack. First time I didn't think about leaving the driveshaft in and soaked myself with fluid. Second time I left that sucker in for sure. Make sure you put some good break in time on that organic clutch.

ya once that trans is out you have plenty of room to work around.. as far as taking out with a floor jack i give props to you.. it can be done just a lot harder..

heres an update for today...

got evvverrything removed.. lots of oil everywhere. im thinking maybe i should put a new rear main seal in while im here..

clutch wasn't half as bad as i had imagined.. it's the original from 93 and it's been through some hell.. i thought i would be pulling out a thin wafer of clutch the way it drove

flywheel's off at the machine shop.. anyone think i should do the rear main while im here??

Absolutely! It's easy. You don't want to have a bad leak later down the road and kick yourself for not doing it now.

P.S. Your engine is pretty damn clean compared to how my old one was.

no you dont have to drop the exhaust. you just have to remove the clamp from the transmission to the cat. like 2 bolts or something
