Why do people shorten them? or buy short ones? Tips?

Quicker shifts...........shorter throw travel.

i went frm a stock z28 shifter....to a factory hurst shifter with a lou's short stick...

old setup - from 1st to 2nd gear the **** traveled ~8"
new setup - from 1st to 2nd the **** traveled 3.5"

and it was MUCH more solid....no sloppy rubber bushing.
