Purpose of adjustable slave?

Hey guys, I got my car and it has one on it. I was just wondering what the purpose of the adjusment on a slave was for? Any help?

I ask this because sometimes I have problems going from 2nd to 3rd at WOT. I'm thinking a may need to do the drill mod? I can't seem to find any how to's on it though.
