Default Registering/Emissions for CA

CA peeps.

I will probably land a job out there in So Cal (Ventura), what mods can I get away with out there and what will I have to give up? Cam is 224/224 112 lsa. No PCV and I have air filters as a result. Gotta know to get ready!

will I pass registration?

The things in red are your problem areas. In Cali, you have to pass a visual inspection as well as a sniffer test. Meaning that you have to have CARB legal (aka shorty) headers, you have to have stock cats in their stock location, and you have to have AIR and EGR in place if your car was equipped with it. Your cam is iffy, it can pass the sniffer with a spot on tune, but no guarantee.

What I were do if I were you is leave your car as is and find a smog shop that will pass you, for a fee of course.

224 on a 112 prob wont pass. it will on a 114 though.

I'm in a similar situation, moving from Chicago to Ventura County. Can someone suggest a local f-body club or some folks who know of a good place to have the smog check performed.

If you have a really good tune, you can probably pass with a 112 LSA

my LT's have no hookup for the Air, so a "freindly" shop will have to do it or back to stock emissions/exhaust for me (but will add AFR 205's as they have a carb #) to counter-act the loss.

after I get "smogged" then comes registration, correct? I bring the smog certificate to AAA/DMV or something like that. Do they do an additional visual inspection here as well? or once I have been "smogged" I'm good with the DMV to get plates?

will I get away with the front plate on my air dam there? Here in RI, I do.

Once its smogged it gets transfered electronically to the dmv so you wont need anything to bring other than the title and a bag o cash. Go AAA or make an appointment at the DMV.
You need to run a front plate here unless you dont mind getting pulled over.

Don't do it, don't move here!! cops are not "friendly" when it comes to modded cars and registration fees just doubled!!

Peeps here are way cool, that goes without saying but the cost of living (rents), state taxes and the DMV will give you a beating from hell. I had to move not much of a choice but, if you don't have to, stay on the other side of the state line just ask the peeps in Arizona.

well, I'm waiting for an offer this week. Plan is to go there as is and keep my current plates as long as possible or if I can get passed a smog inspection. I also can wait until the state tells me to fix it all. But my last big question is whether the state will want to inspect my out-of-state vehicle at the DMV. That would be game over keeping my current setup. Worst case is I'll spend $4k getting my car to pass smog and redoing my setup to keep the near same power levels (AFR's and a cam with a 114 lsa vs my 224/224 112 I have now) . As for rent, I have relatives who want me to live with them

There is a chance that you could get reported somehow and have to register in CA. Otherwise just keep your AZ plates.

Why in the hell would you spend 4k to change your set up instead of paying ~200 every two years to "pass" smog?

Trouble for now is I don't know of any friendly shops in the area . I have to wait 'till I move out there

The DMV will look at your car but they only check the vins they do not do anything about mods when you go to dmv. If you get lucky and can get an illegal smog your only worries would be getting pulled over by a dick cop that sends you to a ref which then you would have to make the vehicle back to stock.

Catch can goes a long way too.

Don't have a shop do your removal/install, DIY or have someone local do it for you. That way you learn at the same time.

a 112LSA will pass if you have your stock headers and cats on. Ask me how I know!!!! shoot even with some patriot stg 2's I know of a car that passed
