Why is the head gasket blocking the lifters?
I just removed the rockers and pushrods and i thought i could just use a magnet to remove the lifters but there's a gasket material blocking the removal.

Be sure to be liberal with the RTV on the front and back edges, but not TOO liberal! Otherwise drips of RTV could fall down, get pulverized and sucked into the oil galleries I suggest using some quality RTV as well, not the stuff that comes with the gaskets. Get some of "The Right Stuff".
I guess Ace Hardware sells it too.

Spider plate is in the middle (light colored steel)
Dog Bone:
Some dog bones also surround the whole lifter body, but I don't see either one being better than the other.
Here's a better pic:
And a suuuper sized version of it:

Red: They shouldn't compress easily by hand since they'll have oil in them, which is why they're called Hydraulic lifters (hydraulic roller in this case). Some may be able to get pushed down a bit since some oil could've drained out, but when you get the motor running again they should 'pump up' (fill with oil) again and all is well. As for the sound, um... I guess it could, but there's lots of other things that can cause knocking/clanking noises :\
