Default LT1 Backfires After Header Swap

Switched from mids to longtubes and got everything hooked back up, running open headers btw, car started right up, ran but every 5-10 seconds the exhaust pops and shoots a flame out of the headers. I started it once, did it a couple times, shut the car off, checked everything, started it again, ran it for about a minute, no pops or backfires, shut it off, then i started it back up again and it started backfiring again.

I ran the car without the cold air intake and the air temp sensor wasnt plugged in but the MAF was hooked up. Also didnt have the O2 sensors hooked up since the headers didnt come drilled for them. Was thinking that would have been it, but i cant imagine the car going into closed loop immediatly since O2s only read in close loop right?

Any ideas?

With open headers, (no tune?) and no o2's, it's likely that you are running really rich, hence the backfires out the exhaust. To be certain though, I'd check to see that you have the wires hooked up correctly and no wires are touching or arcing to the headers.

For open headers, yes you will probably need a tune..

I'd just do a tune anyway with headers over the factory tune.. should notice some gains and should run much better

LOL. While I never mixed up my plug wires, I once forgot to plug the opti harness back into the engine harness. Scared me for about 10 seconds until I looked under the hood.
