Default LS1 Third Gen owners step in

Well the girl is getting a IROC later this summer and we are gonna restore the car but I don't want it to be slow since Im spoiled with my H/C GTO. The car will have a LS2 short block with AFR 205s and ported fast 92, and a slightly built T56. We want it to also have more mordern handling also. I have been looking at alot of the Spohn parts like the K-member and ETC. Tell me about your car's and how much they have changed. Thanks, John

well I just got the engine in mine and I am starting on the 4th gen dash. So far so good I will let you know more once I have it running.

subframe connectors are a must. Tubular k-member makes a lot of room for ac and headers. Skulke trans crossmember would give you good exhaust clearance.

I kept the stock crossmember and used the hawks/spohn mounts. All UMI suspension pieces, Eibach pro-kit, and bilstein shocks/struts. Haven't driven it yet, but it's looking nice You'll want to check out the ltx-lsx forum on thirdgen.org as well - lots of info on these swaps.

Hawks has the only headers made for this conversion. You can notch the k-member to make room for the AC condenser, but a tubular piece is nice if you intend to upgrade all the suspension and handling.

There are plenty of parts available now to do this. I started mine shortly after Spohn and BMR started making their K-members and I waited 3 months for Spohn to make a chrome-moly one for me, but they kept dragging their feet. I ordered one from BMR along with the rest of the suspension, they fit good and I've had great customer service with them.

If you haven't found it yet, thirdgen.org has the most info on this swap, but there's great technical info here too.

Do you have anymore pictures of your exhaust y-pipe? Im doing 3" Hawks headers into a catback and want to do it like yours!

I used Drew's transmission mount and it has two Random Tech cats installed.

No I didnt use the tubular K member and as far as headers you could use any LS1 headers you just will most likely have to do some knotching on your k member. I have some extra spohn conversion mounts and LSx motor mounts if you need them. they are still new. I put them on the K member but ended up not using them.

I don't think you can use any LS1 header. From what I remember reading here, those headers point out to the sides and it doesn't work with the 3rd gen frame.

Head over to thirdgen.org - there is a whole LS1/LT1 conversion sub forum under "engine swaps".

You will improve handling by the 140lbs the LSX motors eliminate over the front wheels without any other changes.

Drews is a member at TGO and it's for a T56. He was making and selling these, but heard he has stopped responding to requests. You can get a similar piece from Skulte:

if ur going to spend all this money , it would be good if u could get he Ls1 RACK & pinion Steering to work. There is a company like UMI/SPOHN/BMR that makes tun K-memeber with R&P mounts and correct spindles

We completed one a few years ago on a really nice 1992 with around 170k miles on it. The owner drives it daily and has still continued to drive it daily on his 60 mile commute to work for the last few years with the LS1 6-speed setup. We used the Spohn mounts and all factory gauges/ idiot lights work. The only thing that wasn't in the budget at the time of the build were headers so it has manifolds, but that's alright because I think it's going to be turbo time this coming winter.

Here is our new swap kit for the third gen that uses the 98-02 F-Body and the style of hedders that will be used in the swap. TheF-Body kit is in the works but will be based on the 92-96 B-Body design

im not finished but i went with the Skulte x-member for the trans. took me almost 3 months and numerous emails before he finally got one shipped out to me. the Hawks headers are very nice and they fit really nice to. i used stock k-member and the hawks motor mounts with my ls1 clamshells, was a piece of cake putting the motor in. not finished with the car yet, but it will be pretty nice once i get it finished.

Thanks for all the info guys and will the tubular K members from spohn and bmr be strong enough for a daily driver. I don't know if they were built for road racing or drag racing. Thanks

The tubular k-members from both are pretty well built, I don't think anyone has had problems from daily driving.
