before i grenade my 7.5 i want to switch to something stronger
thinking about the 9in ford. however, i have heard the 9in is rather loud/whines
as compared to a 12 bolt.
any thoughts on this???
oh, if it matters, will be heads/cam car, street driven, full exhaust..

No 1 type of rear whines more than any other it just depends on how its set up. I have a 9in and the gear dosn't make a sound its just the Detroit locker that makes all the noise but thats to be expected with any locker.

anyone remember a few years back in gmhp they had
an article on this, something to do with the offset of
the pinion gear (compared to a 10/12 bolt)
so far that does not appear to be true. (good news!)
anyone else??

I don't think the pinion offset of a nine inch would cause any kind of noise; that just makes the U-joint flex a little more and robs a very small amount of power. My Moser 9 inch does have a small amount of gear whine, but I have to concentrate to hear it. The sound it makes as you deaccelerate is actually a very cool sound that I consider to be a bonus! Sounds like a jet turbine spinning down. Moser claims the gear whine is normal for their pro-street gears; cut for strength not quiet running.
