Default How often to replace valve springs + other maintenance questions

Hey guys,

I have a full bolton LS1 with Speed Stage II 5.3 heads and a Comp 224/224 .581/.581 114LSA Cam.. 3500 stall, stock rear.

I'm just curious how often your supposed to change the valve springs. I think i remember reading someone with a big cam needed to change them every year or so, so I was just wondering, I don't want anything to blow up lol.

Also is there anything else in the car that should be taken care of regularly, things that aren't obvious like the oil, that I should know of? Spark plugs, wires, anything else. I just need some info to make sure my car stays in good condition!

Thanks everyone!

It is recommended to check ALL spring pressures once a year or every 15K miles.
That does not mean they will need replacing, that is proper maintenance.
Depending on the lobes used and if properly installed, certain springs can last 30+k, some less some more.

I have had the springs in my car for over 20K miles.
Granted my cam is "small" by today's standards but the car still
feels strong. I also don't get on it too hard often so I'm sure that helps.
They are the old rev duals.
I hope to get new heads this summer so maybe I will send my springs somewhere to
get checked just for argument's sake . . .

I replaced my plug wires about a month ago. They needed them at 30k miles.
Car is a tad more responsive.

If you really want to learn go here

http://www.hastingsmfg.com/ServiceTi...ng_inserts.htm

It is easy to tell some one what to do its a little harder to take it upon yourself to research it out and learn.

Depends a lot on the valve spring your running. We typically like to see people check springs at 20-25k miles, but the new PRC EHT valve spring was designed with materials that allow for 2-3 times the life of the standard valve spring most shops on here sell. For a extra $50 basically you get a spring that can go many many times longer, increased spring pressures, and all around a much much better material!

Hey Predator,

my tuner told me to replace them every 8k or so? Street driving is what kills them..

With that being said, i have had my springs since 1/2007 they are PRC dual springs with 7,800 miles on them.

What do you think i should do?

Sorry for the Brian

I've had my PRC platinums for 2 motors and roughly 28K miles. Still within spec. Like I said, there is no (xx K miles) and replace. They have to be measured and if within specs you can continue to use.

How do you measure them? And what specs am i looking at for them to be within reason?

You have to heck a couple of things. You have to check if they are square first of all because if they are not square you are having issues. You can use a spring tester(made specifically for springs) or a table mounted torque wrench. Also make sure that the spring that you have is the spring that needs to go there. Specailly if you bought a car with "upgrades" If the spring has too much pressure or not enough you are going to have issues. Really like I said you have to research to know how to do it.

You need a tool such as this one.
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Your looking for the spring pressure to be where the camshaft company that ground the cam wants it to be...say 250# closed.

And to make it easy, you remove all of them, you take them to a good machine shop and they have all the tools.
There is more than 1 way to skin a cat.

Whoah, forgot about this thread lol. Thank you Jonas for keeping it alive and asking these questions haha. I can't remember exactly, but the person I bought the car from may have replaced the valve springs either at 60K, or recently before he sold me the car. The car has 87K now.. and their Patriot Gold Double springs..

Would I notice in the car itself if something were wrong with them?

I completely agree. Some knuckle heads try to go 50k on springs when running T-rex/MSx ranged cams that have been revved to redline frequently and cry about broken springs or dropped valves.

I have bout 5-6k on Newer Comp 918's on a VRx4 cam and I plan on over the winter to be changing the springs over then having them all tested. The springs should have 10k by the end of the season.

The PRC Platinum spring will hold up very very well at the bellow .600" lift point. I fully expect you could see well past 30k miles at your lift. That being said it never hurts to check them, but at 8k miles it's just way to early.

We've tested that spring as well as our new spring, at bellow .600" lift the Platinum/Xtreme/ whatever you want to call them will work well & live a long life!
