Ya those 2 "nipples" should be connected. Thats the pcv system and it uses the suction of the intake to pull crank case pressure.

Yes you are...Just go buy a small piece of tubing and connect them together.
or you put a catch can there...

lol he's being sarcastic. don't put a catch can there. just go buy a small piece of rubber hose (most parts stores you can buy it by the foot) that fits tightly over the ports/nipples and connect them and you'll be fine. (spray some rubbercare or WD40 on the hose ends to make it slide on easier)
