Posted this in the wrong one...But got a set of these from my buddy and wondering what I need to get the most out of em. Going on a stock LS1 with about 168k miles on it. In a B4C S.C. hp car...Heads came off a 5.3 truck...Let me know what you think

Also not trying to hijack the thread but can someone also tell us what head gaskets to use? Would you buy head gaskets for the new 799's your installing or for whatever year LS1 you have?

i use l92/ls3 gaskets.
for just about evrything even 5.3 motors,
used to use lq4 6.0, but
l92 are around 4.1 bore .05 compressed
lq4 are 4.045 .055 compressed. either one will work

Stock 5.3 heads would be pointless on an LS1 because the valves are smaller. Unless they're ported and the valves opened up to at least LS1 stock size, it'll probably hurt power production.

Really? Can you post the valve sizes and flow numbers for 799 heads vs the stock LS1 heads.

Isn't a 799 the same head as a 243. I don't think its off of a 5.3.

It's the 5.3 H.O. head.

I have heard nothing but good things about these heads..I don't mind porting it at all I just want to know what would be the best CC for it..A little more info about it also..Probably not going to do much besides the head swap..some long tube headers a fast 90 intake/90 tb probably the rumbler tsp exhaust...maybe a cam but not sure about it or not..going to be a basic car maybe something to play around in the street with but I drive a hour to work and hour back..so nothing to bad until i find a better work vehicle

799 are the same as 243, the Z06 uses different valves which are lighter but aren't as durable with stiffer springs.

The 799 are installed on 5.3 HO motors but they also install them on a bunch of motors.

those mods are almost a waste without a good cam to go with them. i would do cam and exhaust first, then worry about heads and intake. the right cam will not take anything away from the reliability and drivability you need, let you will see the most hp gains from it.

Well then I probably will go ahead and get the cam also. But I've already got the heads..got a pretty good deal on em I thought (250)..Just want em to be ready to slap on when I have the money for the rest of the work...What springs etc and what CC to port to? Also what head gasket should I use?

799's are pretty much bargain 243 heads but are sand cast not permanent mold. I bought a set for $150 they are same CC as the 243s-same valve sizes too(stock 5.3 do have smaller valves-just not these) - just need to upgrade springs for a bigger cam. Porting would be good to do while theyre off-It'd be nice if you could get them CNC ported for 3-400$ - good budget set of heads but add the cam at the same time

Shroomun I would do the heads and cam, everyone has their opinion on these heads but they add horsepower. For the money they are a great mod.

what a load of misinformation. the heads in question are 799's not 706 or 862
get your facts correct before posting.

799 are same design as 243, use same valves, same runners port, same chamber, etc.
