Unhappy grinding in 1st

When I try to accelerate @ high rpms in 1st from a dead stop, something starts to grind. The motor mounts are OK and I recently replaced the tranny mount. It didn't start grinding untill I put new tires on it: a lot stickier tires. The old ones would just turn over. It doesn't make any grinding noise in any other situation. Shifts just fine into all gears. I drive a 96' z28 with 97K miles on it. I bought it with 86K. I have no clue if the clutch was ever changed. This idiot didn't even think of asking.

From your notes above I suspect what you are calling grinding is a clutch slip. Once engaged/ shifted into gear, a manual will not slip. It will not carry any torque if the gears are broken but it will not slip( carry only SOME torque).

That is some nasty sounding clutch slip.
