We have searched forever trying to find a decent ballast set up for the F-bodys, but no luck prior to this point.

I saw a homemade ballast setup a fellow Mustang bracket racer had and could not help but apply it to the F-body format.

Here are the pics of out new ballast set up. We run a lot of index races that require weight addition in a safe manner. I had a buddy fab up this system and it is very user friendly.
I'm loving this set up myself. It's easy to adjust weight and is NHRA legal.

Standard weights are available at local garage sales. I'm thinking one ballast might be sufficient for most applications, but 2 allows the option of keeping the weight secure and low in the rear hatch.

I've always thrown weight in the rear unsecured and I got lucky. but in the event of an accident, it can be fatal. I don't care to risk that anymore.

I just had to share.

funny thing is, i was just thinking about doing this the other day, but was thinking of making something to hide under the rear bumper, like in place of the rear bumper support or something. Similar idea though, but this is much simpler to add/remove weight.

so are they going to be bolted down or welded in? I assumed bolted by the looks of that plate, but those bolt holes look a little small to be legal. Isn't the rule at least (2) 1/2" bolts per 100# or (1) 3/8 bolt per 5#, bolted to the "Frame"?

LOL. Ain't that the truth. I have you to help me in that department, so expect a few calls


I am planning on bolting them in and haven't decided whether to mount both or just one. I rarely use over 100#s of weight. I adjust the shift points to get close and then add weight from there. I'll be opening up the holes or adding more as needed. There will be 3" wide 3/16 steel strap on the underside as a backing support on mine.

where are you guys putting it?

Our battery box is in the right rear pocket. Here's a pic.



I am embarrassed to say, I have no idea what my front to rear weight ratio is. We run an Iron block 408 and also an aluminum block 445 so that will skew the numbers depending on which one I'm running anyway.
