What is the recipe for 400HP crank?

I would like to see 400 crank on a new LT1 engine, what do I need to get there? Can I do it and still have a near stock rumble? Do I need to do 383 to get there?

Man that is a piece of cake even on stock short block. Bolt ons and a cam and your there. Might not even need ported heads.

No 383 needed. Guys with stock shortblocks make 450 rwhp on occasion. If you're looking for 400 to the crank that'll be easy. You need the basic boltons like headers (preferrably longtubes with an offroad Y pipe), 1.6 roller rockers, a good intake setup, at least a 3 inch exhaust with a good muffler. And to put yourself over that 400 hp mark I'd say you need a decent cam. Of course with that cam and the roller rockers you'll definitely need better valvesprings. Something like a cc503 cam with the other mods and a good tune should get you there. You won't even need to upgrade the heads aside from the springs. An electric water pump is dyno proven to add about 10 hp too. It's not that hard to get that kind of power. There are guys making 320 rwhp in bolton only cars with a 6 speed. That equates to about 375 crank hp. It can be done, and won't destroy your wallet.

You'll be there with bolt ons, cam, and a tune.

The car is a 1994 Z28 A4 currenly with 3.23 gears (planning on upgrading to 3.73). Not planning on N20, atleast not right away.

HERE IS WHAT I WAS I THINKING,

Stock short block $800.00 (found a resale brand new).
Pacesetter LT with Y $317.00 Ebay
Ported stock intake $150.00 (local)
LE1 budget heads $800.00 (Elliott port works)
Cam LE 212/222 .544/.544 114 LSA $300.00 or 220 / 230, .510 / .510 114 LSA... Comp Cam $225.00
Gasket kit $225.00 (Summit)
Mail tune $150.00 (Madcarter)

Total $2775.00

Will this get me to 400 hp more or less?

Do you think this is the least expensive/best way to go?

Those are very small cams plus mail order tunes ALWAYS leave power left on te table. I think you will come out closer to 380 RWHP or 340-350 RWHP.

Get a bigger cam and dyno tune and your there.

I've got some Pacesetter ceramic coated longtube headers and Off-road y-pipe for sale. With fake cats welded in to fool emissions and get away without having cats. Only been on my car like 9 months, still in very good condition. I also have a BBK throttle body and nitrous plate.. PM if interested.

What cam would you recommend? Remember I want near stock idle.

Do not port the intake? Will I not leave more HP behind by not doing the intake, if I will only pick up 10Hp from getting better heads?

Porting the intake will only really show gains in very high rpm range and since you want basically a sleeper cam you won't be spinning that high. As for a cam really man the best idea is to call Lloyd and ask him what cam he would recommend to be semi stock sounding but provide you with the power you are looking for. I would spend some of the extra money you're saving by not buying the intake on getting the LE2 heads. You will be much happier.

If you want stock idle, that is going require that the potential power be a bit lower. Once you hit around 220 on the duration, and depending on the LSA, the idle is going to get lumpy.

Yes, call Lloyd and tell him exactly what you want and he will suggest the parts. Ported intake is good for around 10RWHP but you have to rev it high to take advantage.
