Corvette Performance - My lil C5 project

25.2/25.3 good to 6.0 sec at over 200mph C5 Corvette LSx Build.
Here's some pics of what I have going on in my garage. I wanted to build something other than your typical F-body and your every day mustang. So decided to go with a Vette.
This car will be good to go 6.0's at over 200mph. It'll be a four link rear suspension with the rear frame rails still in place. Most santioning bodies today will require cars going over 200mph to have a full floater rear housing. I'm running a Bears Performance fab 9 4130 housing with Mark Williams floater kit along with the MW 40 spline gun drilled axles. Oh yea, and the Mark Williams dual rear calipers. Bears Performance promod fourlink kit, wishbone, and torsion bar. The rear shocks are Santhoff double adjustable. Front shocks are strange double adjustable.
I am doing all the fab work, bending and fitting of all the tubing.

http://i522.photobucket.com/albums/w347/DaCajun_2008/DSCN3499-1.jpg
Began the project by building my own tubing bender. Bought the plans over in Ebay. Purchased the 1",1 1/4", 1 1/2", 1 5/8" dies from Pro-tools. I also purchased a Mitler Bros. tubing notcher.

Ya gotta have some parts. Well lots of parts. Here's a just a few.
BTW, This car is being built and funded by myself. No sponsors at this time. However that is always open for discussion.
http://i522.photobucket.com/albums/w347/DaCajun_2008/DSCN3249.jpg
Weld Aluma star spindle mount wheels. Notice the four piston calipers. These are not available as a kit for spindle mount wheels. So I had source the correct disc and hats to put together something that'll stop a car a the weight these cars are having to weight.

http://i522.photobucket.com/albums/w347/DaCajun_2008/DSCN3250.jpg
A little front suspesion work. Redoing the whole thing by fabricationg some upper and lower control arms along with a kingpin with a stange spindle. This will also tuck the front wheels in so they don't have that flush fit with the front fenders. I am also increasing the caster to be able to go to total of postive 10degs. Lots of adjustment. Should go nice a straight. All parts constructed out of 4130.

The original rear Frame rails will go back in once I get all the rear stuff completed.
I'm building the car with some versatility in mind. I will run the local Texas True Ten Five Extreme street class. But wih the adjustable rear shocks and four link I can always run a taller rear tire and have all the adjustabilty in the rear suspension I'll ever need. It should also be very strong. Hopefully it'll hold alot power. You never know when a big cubic inch big block with a set of twins may find it's way between those front frame rails.:D

Ok, now let's move on over to the front of the car. Gotta have some sort of cooling. I designed a removable radiator support basket. Take a close look at the pictures. The rad frame is hinged and it plugs right into the front lower frame. If for any reason the radiator needs servicing or to be replaced it'll be a snap. Also, I may end up using the intercooler ice box to cool the motor. If that's the case the radiator comes right out. But that would not be much of a street car would it. I do plan on driving the car on the street also. It will be streetable.

Now for the power adder. I wanted this to be versatile as well. To run the TTT.5 extreme street class I will be limited to an 88mm turbo. No problem, it'll be on a T-6 flange. Heck unbolt that liitle 88 and bolt on a 106 or up to a 116 for that matter. Now if I decide to go with some twins, and I'm sure some where down the road I may just do that Big cubic inch BBC with some pro-mod 90's, that won't be a problem. Heck the rear suspension should handle it so why not?? So I designed a removeable frame for the single turbo. Latter on I can build a frame that'll hold a set of twins and it will set right in place with ease.

First off, by the numbers FRC's are fewer in numbers than any year's production of Z06's so he did follow your logic if it's not a repainted electron blue FRC :)
to the OP, I cannot imagine running into something looking like that on the street, amazing work on building that all yourself, that thing will be nasty. Any info on the engine specs? I'm assuming it will be a stock bottom end LS6 right? hahaha.

You have some mad fabrication skills. Obviously not your first chassis build. What did it feel like when you first started cutting the chassis up? Has there ever been a point in the project where you thought "Oh crap, it will never sit on 4 wheels again"?
What are you welding your turbo mount to? Did you fabricate a mild steel front frame?
Add some new progress pictures when you can. Can't wait to see how this car turns out.
dacajun
07-30-2009, 01:26 AM
The turbo is mounted on this removable frame I fabricated. It's made of chomoly and if you look at the pictures below so can see how I mounted it to the factory front frame rails. I made what I refer to as saddles, just lay it on the saddles and it bolts right into place. And if in the future I ever decide to go to twin turbos all I have to do is fabricate another cradle for the turbos and it'll bolt right where this single was.
How it felt to cut up this car? Well it started as I was going to just do a solid rear axle then it just kinda got out of hand from there. :eek2:
And this is the first time I have ever done any chassis work at all. Sometimes you just gotta say, I think I can do that and get in a get your feet wet. Do I feel like it'll ever hit the ground? I'm hoping that happens in the next couple of weeks.
I'll be posting up some progress pics soon.
BTW, I've been talking with Shawn at Virgina Speed to build my motor. He's done some really fricken amazing stuff for Phil "Phil99vette" and Brian "Fireball". Both of those cars a really hauling tail and appear they are just going to get faster.
And thanks a bunch for all the kind words guys!!! Believe it or not that sure helps a bunch. Especially with how hot it's been here in Texas!!

...see how I mounted it to the factory front frame rails.
I mistakenly thought that the C5 frame rails were hydroformed aluminum. A quick Google and your pictures show that the frame is indeed mild steel. I really like your modular design.
...And this is the first time I have ever done any chassis work at all. Sometimes you just gotta say, I think I can do that and get in a get your feet wet.
WOW - I just don't know what to say. From the limited welding I have attempted, I learned that some folks have "the knack" while others just have to work hard at it (just like all other art forms).

Yea, that would be the C6 Z06 and ZR1s that are built with the hydroformed aluminum frames.

VETTEZILLA huh?? I've been to busy building the car to come up with a proper name for this build. What do ya'll think, VETTEZILLA it is ???
Thanks hawaiic5 for the potential new name for the car!:)

Damn the car is beautiful!!! You are one hell of a fabricator man, you ever think of doing it for others?? I see you said you live in tx?? where at cuz I would love to come check the car out someday :)
I do have one question though concerning your last round of pics?? Why is there a wastegate on what looks like a ice-water box intercooler like setup?? I have never seen a wastegate mounted there since its used for exhaust so is this something new or is that not an intercooler?? Other than that the car looks great man!! Keep up the great work you are doing.

What you see is a 60mm HKS wastegate. Wastegates can be used as BOVs as well. It'll have a tube attached to the exhaust side of the gate that'll vent to the outside of the cabin. That Air/Water intercooler is made to handle up to 4000 hp!!! :eek2:
At this time I have no plans on doing any chassis work as a bussiness as I have two 69 Camaros I need to finish once this car is completed. One Camaro will be a Protouring car and the other a Prostreet car. The Protouring Camaro will be powered by a twin turbo LSx motor with all the suspension components, brakes, and ABS system removed from this Corvette. The Prostreet Camaro will be powered by a 600cid 10/71 E85 EFI BBC. Once I complete these three cars I'm going to try and enjoy life for a while....
Thanks again,
Dave

Never seen a wastegate used as a bov thats interesting?? May I ask what the difference would be?? I mean I know the hks gtII is not cheap by any means but what does it do better than say 50mm tial??
Wow you are building some monster cars it seems. I hope you make some vids when you get them going so we can all drool over them :)

You know I never really gave naming the car much thought. See how most people name their cars or build these days maybe I should. SpaceShip, huh???
How about some more input on this??
I believe someone else had referred to it as Vettezilla.
Right now it's just a "wet dream" but I'm trying hard as hell to make it become a reality!!!!

Twin 88's that is!!!

As I posted earlier I will be able to run twins or a single. All I'll have to do is switch out the cradle in which the turbos are mounted on and a bit of plumbing.
Here's a few of pics of my intercooler.

Killer work! Couple things: Is that the type of ignition that you are running or just a mock up motor? Also, RHS makes a aluminum LSX block that goes out to 515ci now. Might be something to look into!

Yea, I had to put a hold on the project for a little bit due to some health issues with a family member. Family first!!! Now that she's doing well it appears it's my turn, I've been having a bit of some issues myself. As soon as I can I will get back to work on this thing and make it become a reality. Any yea the RHS block has become the way to go these days. Much better heads as well. But I do appreciate the continued interest with the car, that always helps with the motivation as that alone can become an issue at times. But again I hope to have this thing out and ready to go this spring, although it may just have a training wheels motor in it, 1200 - 1500 hp to get the car all sorted out. No need to have the big bullet in it to get the suspension tuned in. I will post some pics as soon as I have some new advances in the build.
Thanks again,
Dave

damn nice build up! how's the tube bender working for you, have a seller ID? what kinda work do you do?? some serious talent man
dacajun
10-23-2011, 05:41 PM
The bender works great. Actually I just got around to adding some out-riggers that have leg levelers on them along with a bubble level.
No, no seller id. I've never done this kinda work before. Just kinda have the attitude if someone else can do it why can't I. So I collected all the tools necessary to attempt a project such as this and got to work. I must admit, fabricating is a lot of fun. At the end of the day you can sit back and look at the work you've accomplished and mostly feel good about it. Also it gives you a much greater appreciation to the guys that do this in there own garages and or shop such as Phil "Phill99vette", Brian "Fireball" and the many others that are out there that are turning their dreams into a reality. I just hope my dream becomes a reality soon.
That's a good idea, Once I get back to work on finishing up the turbo hot and cold parts I will open up a thread in the FI section.
And I appreciate all the kind words....
