Heads questions
Thinking about getting another set of Lt1 heads and having them worked. 3 angle valve job, shaved 20 thousands and ported. How much hp would this pick up and would it be ok if I shaved the heads as far as getting good valve clearence.

Valve clearance will most likely not be an issue on most builds, but "ported" is the most vague description ever. It can be anywhere from a huge gain to a loss of power depending on who does it.

It is, he's saying it all depends on the quality of portwork, aka, who does the porting. If you took a die grinder with no experience and hogged out all of the ports, you'd likely be left with 20+ lb paper weights. But if you take your stock heads to an experienced head porter, the gains will be impressive.

I was wondering how much power just off shaving them down and raising compression. And how much can you have them before you have to worry about valve clearance. I know it will depend on the size of cam but lets just say stock cam.

Every 1 point in static CR increase is roughly 3% power increase IIRC, not huge gains and pretty much guarentees you'll need premium fuel.
As for power increase from porting, again it all depends on who does them and what they do to the heads. Power gains can be minimal from just "cleaning up" the castings to extreme at AI or LE quality.

No one can tell you a specific number. There is no magical horsepower number that is just pulled out of a hat or a special equation to determine such. The correct answer is "some."
Sheesh. When will everyone understand that it is the sum of the parts that make power, not individual components?

OK point taken, but this is why I ask...I can get my current heads shaved, 3 angle valve job and assembled for 400.00 plus 250.00 in parts locally or I can send them to LE for there budget head deal for 800.00 plus shipping ($900 all in). Just tring to figure if it is worth the down time and $250 to ship them to LE? If the HP is near the same I will stay local. Oh ya 224/230 cam with cold air, and LT headers.
IMO i wouldnt do a mild port job on a head cause then it would just make you want more. That would lead to spending more money than just sending your heads to lloyd to do the LE2 heads. 1350 shipped for heads and 1650 shipped for H/C is one hell of a deal.

damn who are you shipping through? $250 is outrageous. Im in Ky and I just shipped my stockers to Fl for $23 UPS ground.

Shiping is about $50, the difference in price is the head work itself.
