Which new turbo should I go with?

Default Which new turbo should I go with?

Well, I was driving my car up to Speed Inc last week to get some injectors installed and a few other things. On my way up, I could start to hear my turbo starting to make some noise It sounded like change clanking around if that makes any sense. Well, I talked to them the other day and a bolt actually went through the exhaust somehow and chewed up the impeller on my gts76!! I have no idea how it got there but I have to basically replace or rebuild the turbo so I'm wondering what everyone thinks I should go with. Here's my mods:Engine Iron block 408
Callies Magnum crank
Compstar rods
Diamond pistons
Total seal rings
TEA stage 2 LS1 heads
Camshaft..232/240@ .050 595/608 lift 115 LSA
Fast 90/NW 90 intake
SLP LT's
LS6 oil pump

76 GTS rearmount turbo...started out as a STS system, EPP completly reworked most all of the orginal STS.

Bmr dbl adj control arms
Lake wood adj. panhard rod

Any input is appriciated, I've been told that I could go with a bigger turbo and I guess now would be the time to upgrade So post away!!

80 or 88mm are the next step up. What kind of power goal do you have? If its something your 76GTS could pull off, maybe get another one.

I'm thinking around 800-850rwhp. I think I caould accomplish that with the 76 but I didn't know if it would be a wise idea to spend the few hundred extra to get something a little bigger. I was also wondering about lag, would a bigger turbo make it noticabley (sp?) worse?

Im think that if you have a 76 maybe you should stick with that. If you move larger you need to modify a few things to make the turbo fit. Lag on an 80/88mm will be noticeable.

I wouldn't think an 80 is that much bigger but I could be wrong? I think Zombie is running one but then again his is probibilly modified.

101mm I'd go with whatever Larry and the guys at Speed Inc recommend. If they think you can step it up to an 80 or 88 I'd say go for it. You might have a little more lag with the bigger turbo but I don't think it will be noticeable with a good tune. Zombie is running an SX80 I believe. You could also pm Zombie to see what he thinks would work best with your setup. Whatever you do just don't sell it.

If you have Precision 76GTS and youre moving up to an 80mm Precision there will be quite a difference in lag. Its not just a larger compressor, but also a larger turbine wheel. That will make a noticeable difference. Also, if you arent making use of all the power you can get with a bigger turbo, no sense in having more lag.

I would think a gts76 would be choking that big 408ci like crazy, I would definately go witha turbo witha t6 exhaust, especially with an auto it wont be to hard to spool, imo.

It just really depends on your goals. I dont know that a 76 gts will make 850 rwhp through an auto, with a 408, rearmounted. What did you think about the way the 76gts spooled? Could you deal with a slower spooling turbo?

Yeah, I could. It get's full boost by about 3500 so I'm not too much worried about a little more lag. Basically Larry at Speed Inc told me when I first told him about the car that the turbo was too small for that motor. I should probibaly hear from Larry sometime this week with some recommendations, I just wanted to see what some of the other members experiences were.

I didnt even see you had a 408. As long as the 76 wasnt dropping off fast up top, it would be fine. If it was and you can deal with more lag, get an 80mm.

If you PM Zombie the first thing he's going to say is get rid of those crappy long tubes. Then probably mention something about the 3.73 gears, then about the 4l60 having a limited life span for youre desired power goals.

A t76 will get you around 650 rwhp on a 408, turbo is just too small. Even the 80mm I'm running probably won't get you past the 800 rwhp mark. For a 408 you really need an 88mm turbo.

The longtubes are already replaced with stock 02 manifolds, wrapped, and a stainless works offroad y pipe. I know that the trans isn't going to last forever, but it works fine for now. FLT has cars with 4l60e's running deep in the 9's for over a year now. And the car already dynoed over 650 rwhp on a mustang dyno.

What brand 88 do you reccommend and what kinda $$ are we talkin here. And do I have to upgrade anything else besides the turbo itself?
