Default cam/gearing/tire question

ok i have a question about large cam and gears vs tire size etc. i have 4.10s and 28" tires. i finally made my decision and will be ditching the m6 for a th400.

now if i run a decently sized cam. companies recommend 4.10s or a 3500+ stall. so you can get into the power band quicker...

ive heard of people running 3.42 rear gear with 28" tires with that large of a cam and running some decent times. especially when spraying the car.

can someone explain this to me...

If you're looking for track results, and don't care about streetability, I'd put a 5000 rpm converter in the car, unless you are definately going to be spraying it, in that case a 3500 sized converter (10 inch) would work pretty good as a starting point, and would be a more streetable setup.

As for cam size, the bigger the cam the more it's going to like the looser converter. But, if you add nitrous into the equation it's not going to need the loose converter due to the low end tq the nitrous will make.

You're already running a decent sized cam (from the sig info) and I wouldn't mess with too tight a converter with a cam that size, unless you are spraying it, in that case the 3500ish size is uaually a good starting point. If you want n/a performance, 5000+

like JL said if you go with nitrous get a smaller gear but i had a M6 and just converted to a TH400 and stayed N/A ..... i went with 4.10's 28in tire and a 9 in converter with a 5200 stall and i picked up mph

The 28 inch tire/4.10 setup is perfect for 90% of the cars out there, don't change anything there.

ok that makes sense. im not sure if im going to keep this cam though. the best ive been able to get out of the car with 255 drs was a 11.9 @ 117.5 w/ 1.64 60ft. with a th400 and these 28" tires i should see mid to low 11s for sure. i was thinking of going to a solid roller cam and spraying anywhere from 150-250 shot.

at this point im not really worried about dailying the car. i just want a weekend worriar that i can drive on the street to car meets, shows, to the track, etc.

Dump the cam if you think it's a problem. I have heard more then one story and seen more then one case of a cam change making a big difference.

Solid roller is a good expense, but can certainy make alot more power.
