Default Comp 987 Springs

Anyone know any history behind this dual spring? I never hear it mentioned, 'don't know if that's a good or bad thing. It came with my RGR Heads from LS1Speed Inc.

With so much talk on this board regarding spring durability, I wanted to know where I stand with the 987's..

I just replaced my first set of 987's on my TEA heads with my TR 230/224 .576/.563 and they look brand new minus a little paint that wore off on the inner spring. I put 15,000 miles on them with hard *** driving and just replaced em for the hell of it.

No cracks or anything. I'm going to test the seat pressure and check with Comp to see what a new spring seat pressure should be.

Verbs,

I take it from your post that the old 987's weren't that bad when you pulled them?

Can you look at a spring and tell wear?

Verbs, thanks, that's great to know. LS1 Speed Inc. will maintain it's reputation for making wise choices in their set ups....

Very very seldom does a 987 seem to break with proper warm up. I think a few folks with 230+ sized cam went to 977's or something like that for more pressure. I only have ~5,000 on mine - so far no issues. TEA posted a while back a new valve train warranty on their heads. They still use 987's and some other springs to the best of my knowledge. Set up right, and 230 or less in cam and I wouldn't worry. TEA did the valve train set up right, all spring pressure and install heights were dead on the money on my set of 5.3's

I know folks that have ran 232/236 sized cams with the 987's and had no issues.

Last year, I wouldn't even consider heads without duel springs and the 987's seemed to be either the best or among the best duals for our set ups at that time. I think their is a lot of truth in that.

The 987s are good springs. Just like any other spring - let them warm up before beating on them. I had them installed on my set of JPR heads and never had a single problem with them.

All the important points have been covered above..

Proper warm up is the most important. Let the vehicle get to OPERATING temp. before beating on it. Anything between .525-.600 lift will work fine with these springs. Ramps will also have an effect, but nothing to worry about.

Again, encouraging. And even when the engine was bone stock, I never traveled above 3000rpm until the engine hit around 175.

yup ramp rate is a major factor with the new cams. The 987's are for the more extreme ramp rates with max lift of .650
