GM files for Bankrupcy 6/01/09
Well I don't know too much, but heard it on the radio today while driving in to work that it's official. So what does this mean for us and The General?

I'm home sick today but supposedly the government is not going to intervene in GM's car lineup from what was said during today's press conferences. Fritz was mentioned the new camaro as best in class (along with a few other cars) so my guess is that he's still trying to justify keeping the car. (I'm still skeptical)
For shareholders it sounds fairly grim CNBC was reporting the company eventually would take the profitable portions of the GM and move them over to a new IPO which US gov, UAW, and Bondholders as stake holders with perhaps 10% remaining to be divided amongst the current shareholders.
For consumers I'd not expect large discounts at dealerships from what I heard today GM is going to offer a longer time line for dealer closings and may consider inventory buy back. I think they're trying to avoid chrysler's model for closing dealerships.
Take it easy

There will still be a Corvette and a Camaro and even a Cobalt SS (until the Cobalt line gets phased out of course) and Impala SS. For at least another year there will even still be a G8 GT/GXP, Solstice GXP/Sky Redline.
Plenty of fun still remains at GM.
It will be, all warranty related work past, present and future (the immediate future at least) will be honored as it has been since the beginning.

yeah, they arent going to DIRECTLY intervene... but they'll make tighter CAFE and emissions standards, to de facto control what GM produces. GM needs to save face, so they arent going to come out with high perfornance vehicles if the gov't is mandating 'green cars'

The only thing they are going to do is cut the brands that arent selling (which they already have) and push GM in the direction of more fuel efficent cars/trucks. The extent of the changes will probably be something like the MPG of a Silverado going from 12 to 15 (or whatever) in the next few years and the Obama team bragging how they stepped in and how GM's Silverado is now 20% more fuel efficent.
The entire move was just to find a way to cut jobs, close plants and tell people what they will be making for an income rather than working with the unions to come to an agreement.
You'll still have your Corvette's, Camaro's, trucks and whatever else. GM will grow, make more money and buy ownership of the company back. I doubt the government really wants to worry about GM longer than they have to.
Look at the big banks....100,000.00 base pay and 50,000,000.00 in bonuses. It pissed the banks off that they had to stop giving the big bonuses so what are they doing now? Base pay of 49,000,000.00 and a bonus of 100,000.00.
Nothing will change and if there are changes they will be so minor.
